i was reading about one last week that is very efficient but the name escapes me. We are probably about a year away from installing the basement floor, it's one of the last things he does. I am up for any suggestions.

I have this idea that the next outside boiler I do, will put it right into a garage. I know that seems to defeat the outdoor boiler concept, but, you can get more stack on it if you have it under something. One other reason is that sometimes neighbors bitch about wood smoke, especially if it runs all summer,(they don't really run, just simmer) We get a lot of snow some years and having the wood in a shed + + +. I can tell you more about outdoor boilers. The biggest downer is that you don't really want it going out, so if you are going away, somebody you trust needs to feed and look at the temp...
Oh, and never walk away and leave that door open thinking that will get it going,... and forget about it...

The outdoor boiler will be supplemental to the natural gas one that is in the house. I want to be able to leave the house in the winter if I want to.

One of the main enemies of those things, just like guns, is rust.
I am supposing that rust would be much more likely to occur if you let it sit around cold. So, I keep mine going all year. In the summer the damn things are fuggin ugly, around December they start looking pretty.

mine won't rust. It's made from 409 stainless steel.

Stainless has issues too. Mine is Central Boiler. a 5648 which indicates the size of the box 56 x 48 inches, so 4 foot wood is almost doable.

What about building the whole outdoor boiler under a shed? I have about 5 acres to work with and my understanding is i can put it up to 500' from the home.

Also, with the outdoor wood boiler, what if the water gets too hot? The pex is only rated to like 170 degrees ????

pard has an outdoor boiler setup in his garage

pretty skookum

he switched it out for a new/diff one from Scandanavia, went from 12 cords a wood a winter to 6 cords.

used 100 gal. of heating oil for the times they weren't there to feed the boiler.

if your garage is big enough it seemed like a good setup to me (and his was as it was designed with the boiler in mind)

mucho better to go into the garage @ -60 in socks and t'shirt to feed the boiler than outside

at least it'd suit me better

Mine has occasionally hit the 212-214 mark. There are stories of people boiling them dry, or at least down pretty good.
As far as distance goes, I personally would think 200' about max.
that pipe has got to be 15 bucks a foot these days. It's nice to be able to look out a window and look at it. If you see a stack with no smoke; it needs wood.

Thats a big one. Looks like very nice place. Do they require building permits there?

Its 4,000 sq ft and yes got a building permit. I did not get a permit to put a culvert in my creek to build a bridge and they are coming a bit unhinged. eek

Three times Sarah Darlin kept building permits out of here. Most building inspectors qualify cause they worked at home depot grin
