I think a 10x42 will kind of overpower most light to mid weight rifles. I'd probably not put one on anything other than a steel/rock/chuck bustin' chunk. It's not so much the weight, but it's just a BIG scope (archie would love it for his b-hole).

The 3-9x42 is only 2oz lighter, but it's quite a bit more svelte feeling. Rides pretty well on my 243 AI.
