My grandfather passed away a month ago and I was passed down his 1922 Savage model 1899 chambered in 300 Cal with a 410 interchangeable barrel as well as the sets original case. The only blemishes is very little fading on the lever and none visible to the wood stock and forestock. I have no intentions of selling due to promising my grandmother I would never sell his guns, but just curious as to the value. The serial number is: 238065 in case this might help. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

First, I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. My condolences.

Second, welcome to the campfire!

Third, if it's all original, that's a very early cased set. And cased sets are pretty rare, and very desirable.

Any chance you could upload a picture or two? Condition is everything for value. If you need help displaying the pictures, I'm sure couple folks here would be glad to get them up if you can email them.

chrisk1989, I sent you a private message. Look for a flashing envelope up towards the top of your screen by "My Stuff", then click on My Stuff and select Messages. You'll see a message from me in there with my email address.

Anybody ever hear of a cased set with lower serial number? If I remember, the first 99G serial number is just around 235,xxx.

And here's a 1921 ad for Chris. Interesting point is that I think his Savage emblem is centered more on the back rather than high up like the ad.

A lovely rifle, well someone has to say it, might as well be me. What a great shame its been D&T. I bet gradfathers eyes got a little tired and he thought best way to go. He hunted the rifle, never thought of it as a collector. I think we tend to forget that at times

OMG! If it wasn't D&Ted I'd rather have that set than a Monarch! Pity that its been altered but then back in the day it was just a hunting rifle. Sad but the original owner most likely was more concerned with hitting what he was shooting at than keeping it in original condition. I can't fault him as who knew back then that it could have become a valuable collectable.

Very nice rifle, and how cool is it that it has history for you as well! I would hate to hazard a guess at the value, because those don't come up for sale everyday, but it would be in the thousands. Were it passed down from my grandfather, it would be invaluable. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments. I was hoping the D&T wouldn't have affected the value too much, but it was his hunting rifle, so can't fault him for that.

As Norm said. It may have lost its collectable value due to the drill and tap but I'm sure that to you its priceless. Enjoy it for what it is and if you're like me when I hunt my Grandfather's or my Father's rifles every time you hold it in your hands the memories come cascading back.
