I don't recall Ruger warning of drawbacks when turning out 1-8" twist 6.5mm bores, even though folks might run 85-100gr bullets in them. As Stick once said, bullets aren't getting any shorter. Give me a little extra twist in the bank and I will be happier. If a guy wants one twisted slow just for "Bullet Y", it's his money, but I genreally don't think that way.

I ran out an shot a few shots though my 8T 223AI earlier today. The change in bullets from 55s to 75s still amazes me. I will never have another 14T .224.

i agree, the 75s take the .223 AI to another level.

i've gone all the way to 1:7" twist and haven't seen those elusive 'drawbacks', save one batch of old bullets from an unknown source that would occasionally nuke in the air. i have not had this happen with any modern bullets.

from top:
.223 AI/Bux 1-8",M700, AICS
.223 AI/Hart 1-7", M700, HS Precision (my brass burper)
.223 AI M7 (1-12"), McMillan Classic
.223 AI Ruger (1-9")
.223 AI Kimber (1-9")
scopes from bottom two are in getting M1 elevation knobs.

Devil's advocate here....

My last 8 twist 22-204, I had work up my load with 75 VLD's, and was curious as to the speed and accuracy I could get with the smaller bullets.

Not an exhaustive test by any means, as I only used one ball powder and dropped at the range as per usual. The 40 BT's shot just fine, the 50 BT's shot a bit better, and the 55 BT's out shot the first two.

None of the groups were to be ashamed of, but to me, in this limited test, it showed the best accuracy came by matching the twist to bullet can/does/might matter.

I agree with you aalf. My 14T barrel shot great at 100 with 55s. Shot a lot of tiny little groups with it. BUT, I bore so easily at 100 yards I found myself shooting more at 600+ with the gun. At 800 it was wonky on some days. One day it would shoot reliably the next day bullets were everywhere. I found a 55gr berger still fully intact down my my 800 yard target. It had hit point first and managed to penetrate a whooping 1/4 in into a hanging vine. I was able to extract it with my fingers. If I recall a 55 at 800 had less energy than a 22 rimfire at 100. I got tired of it falling transonic, something that I do not have to worry about with the 75s....at least not on my range.

A group I shot today at 800 with dillon loaded ammo. I went back and added two more rounds to this group and it opened up to about 4.5-5 inches. At my altitude and humidity it would be a difficult feat with a 55gr bullet, especially in the switchy winds we had today. I will take the increased LR accuracy over .25 inch of accuracy at 100 yards anyday.

I'm with ya on all counts.....

I guess I should have clarified a bit more. I wasn't the least bit interested in shooting any of the "lighter' bullets, at any distance, for coyotes. I was just satisfying my own curiosity, and a load possibly for calling a cat or two.

I believe in "worst case scenario" preparations, and the 75's give me that, from a coyote standpoint.

Seriously, you made a claim that even fast twist barrels shoot fine with lighter bullets. I'm sure that is why the barrel makers only produce fast twist tubes. smile There is a reason that everyone doesn't order the fastest twist barrel possible when they build a rifle --- there are drawbacks that COULD exist and it is probably fair to be up front with shooters about those.

maybe you could expound on these 'drawbacks that COULD exist'

I was waiting for someone to jump on that.. grin

In 10 years (probably less) slow twists in the 22's will be gone.

I'll vote for you.....IF you have Sako re-create the old L-461 Vixen series in stainless metal with longer latitudes; base it on the 5.6 x 50 OAL instead of .222. No damn flush Euro clips; ss bottom metal or a Wyatt box....

Blued should be available with 'nut.
The GFY SS option should be available with McMillan Hunter or Classic stock.

Twist needs to be 1-9, preferably 1-8 with a round top and 700 ring system.

This will require the killing of some lawyers......

Get your ass to work.

This can and will be done.

Except for the flush mags. I love flush mags.

And we need to ditch the 17 Rem. in favor of the 17-222 Mag.

It needs twisted to fondle 30 Bergs....but you knew that.

Oh, the blued and 'nut jobs need twisted in the classic Rhihimakii 22 Horn/Bee, 222 Sako spin of 1-16; you know, for the "real" accuracy junkies.....
