The one on my 308 does cut the jump. It's louder than my other 308's, but not nearly as loud/concussive as the Swiss cheese or artillery style side vented brakes.

Just file them away with the old 600, 660, and 673's. There are those who just can't live without one, and those who would rather use them for tomato stakes. If you do have one of the newer triangular barrelled monstrosities, hold on to it, there is a model 600 in 350RM for sale in the shop here with a price tag of $975. I am one of those who have to force myself to not look at it, I desperately want it.

Are we sure that the VTR's are discontinued? The OP only mentions the XHR, which I believe is a long-action version of the VTR. I don't see any shortage of VTR's anywhere online, nor any indication that they have been universally discontinued.

Maybe so, but I think Rems pockets are deep enough to try different ideas out.

In regards to the XHR, I talked with Remingtons chief engineer who designed the triangle barrel. He's a benchrest shooter and hunter like most of Remingtons people.
It wasn't just some marketing idea they came up with the sell rifles.
The triangle barrel really worked great at light counters. The idea came off the shooting bench by people who spend a lot of time shooting, not off a bean counters bench.

The VTR's are NOT discontinued, except for the .17 Fireball version. In fact they recently introduced a couple of new variations.

From the back side while shooting I can't tell a difference between my ported .308 VTR and my unported 6.5 M70. I can when when I shoot the magnums.

I have 2, .223 and .243 and they both shoot better than I can. I like hunting with the .243 , It feel real balanced to me.

I've got one in 308. It jumps more than my BAR Browning but I guess that's not apples to apples. I don't mind the triangle but wish the porting was gone. Mine loves light for caliber bullets.
I'd buy it again I guess,.....but then I thought the ford Edsel was cool.

I can tell a noticeable difference in muzzle blast between My standard barrel .243 and My buddies VTR in .243 (his is much louder) his rifle is very accurate though as is mine................Hb

I have two Remington 700 Rifles with the triangle style barrel and they both shoot quite well - thank you.
I hope Remington keeps their "innovative mindset" for a long time to come.
I own a number of Remingtons "innovative firearms" that have performed exceptionally well - and some of them have been discontinued from the Remington lineup.
A few examples:
#1 Remington 788 in 222 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
#2 Remington 788 in 223 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
#3 Remington XP-100 in 223 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
#4 Remington XR-100 in 204 Ruger - shoots exceptionally well!
#5 Remington XR-100 in 204 Ruger - shoots exceptionally well! #6 Remington XR-100 in 223 Remington - shoots exceptionally well!
#7 Remington XR-100 in 22-250 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
Just to name a few.
I would NOT trade off any of the afore mentioned Remingtons for love nor money.
Just because an item is discontinued from a manufacturers line up does not mean said products are automatically un-worthy.
In fact I hope Remington keeps adding to their decades long lineup of innovative arms and cartridges.
