There's also the Stockholm Syndrome where a captive comes to sympathize with the captor. Young girls are very susceptible to that. We won't know until they're caught.

CASCADE Dawn broke with a yellow sun peeking through smoky haze caused by nearby forest fires as the search for suspected murderer and kidnapper James DiMaggio began for the second day.

Overnight, members of the Boise Police Department bomb squad found no explosives in the 2013 blue Nissan Versa belonging to DiMaggio, according to a department tweet. Processing of any possible evidence in the car, which was left where it was found near Morehead Lake in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, has not yet begun, the department said.

That processing is expected to be done by members of the San Diego County Sheriff's Office from California, Patrick Orr, a spokesman for the Ada County Sheriff's Office said Friday evening.

The California agency is more familiar with DiMaggio and has been investigating the murders of Christina Anderson, 44, and her son, 8-year-old Ethan Anderson, Orr said. Their bodies were found Sunday in DiMaggio's burned home near the Mexican border, about 65 miles east of San Diego.

DiMaggio is believed to be traveling with Anderson's 16-year-old daughter, Hannah.

On Wednesday, A Gem County man riding on horseback encountered a man and a teenage girl in the River of No Return wilderness. After coming home and hearing news reports and seeing photos of DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson, he dialed the national Amber Alert hotline and told officials he may have spotted the pair.

He told authorities the pair was carrying camping gear and was hiking into the wilderness. They exchanged pleasantries and the pair seemed in good health.

On Friday, the Versa owned by DiMaggio was found parked at a trailhead. It was covered in brush and the license plates had been removed. It was identified through the car's vehicle identification number, located on the dashboard just inside the windshield.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office has a press briefing scheduled for 10 a.m. Ada County is handling that duty following a request from the Valley County Sheriff's Office, which is heading the search.

More than 100 members of law enforcement will be searching the area Saturday. The FBI, the federal Bureau of Homeland Security and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game are assisting in the search. Ada County sent a dozen members of its tactical team to help.

The national media has started to descend on Cascade. Miguel Marquez, a CNN correspondent based in Los Angeles, flew in to Boise last night along with a photographer. The San Diego Union-Tribune is also sending a reporter and photographer to Cascade.

CASCADE The Federal Bureau of Investigation is bringing in 100 to 150 agents from across the country to help searchers who have worked since Friday to spot suspected kidnapper James DiMaggio in the rugged terrain of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. As many as 200 law enforcement officials are expected to be part of the search effort by day's end.

Jason Pack, a special agent out of the bureau's Washington, D.C., office, said the FBI agents will rotate in and out with the Valley County, Ada County and other local, state and federal officers searching for DiMaggio and 16-year-old Hannah Anderson.

He reiterated the sentiment of other law enforcement officials who have said the safe recovery of Hannah remains the top priority for searchers.

"We're all parents. This is our child," Pack said.

The FBI has brought in search specialists, crisis negotiators and other specialists trained for this kind of situation, he said.

The FBI agents will replace local, state and other federal law enforcement agencies who sent officers to begin the search Friday. Ada County had a dozen members of its tactical team helping with the search.

All of the searchers are law enforcement agents. Unlike an overdue camper or hunter situation, where volunteer search and rescue teams could be employed, the potential danger of the search for DiMaggio prevents that.

"The suspect is presumed to be armed. You can't have volunteers going in to search for him," said Andrea Dearden, spokeswoman for the Ada County Sheriff's Office.

Officers pursuing DiMaggio and Anderson are searching by air and on foot. Searches traveled the steep terrain with horses Friday, but there are no agents on horseback Saturday.

"You can't just drive in there. It's rugged terrain. It's a wilderness area," Dearden said.

Some of the traditional search tacticts would not work in the rugged backcountry terrain, she said.

Were relying on any lead possible, she said. Authorities also set up a tip line for anyone with information in the case: 208-846-7676.

We have teams that are highly trained, thats why theyre here," she said. "Theyre the best of the best.

There's been no sign of DiMaggio and Anderson since a Gem County man on horseback believes he saw the pair about 5 p.m. Wednesday. He contacted authorities later that night after returning home and seeing news reports.

There have been no new sightings since Wednesday, although Dearden said a number of outdoor enthusiasts are still in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.

There are dozens of people in there now, floating or camping, Dearden said.

Authorities are questioning people as they come through the checkpoints, she said, but so far no one has spotted Anderson or DiMaggio.

The bodies of Anderson's mother Christina, 44, and her brother, 8-year-old Ethan Anderson were found Sunday in DiMaggio's burned home near the Mexican border, about 65 miles east of San Diego.

DiMaggio's car, a 2013 blue Nissan Versa was found Friday morning at a trailhead leading to the wilderness, 50 to 60 miles east of Cascade. It was covered in brush and the license plates were removed.

Authorities confirmed it was DiMaggio's car from the vehicle identification number.

Members of the San Diego Sheriff's Office were set to begin examining the car today to search for evidence tied to the murders of Christina and Ethan Anderson and to learn anything about where DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson are headed.

Not very remote. Cascade is a small town but swarming with tourists this time of year. That area gets a lot of traffic.

The Central Idaho Wilderness (East of McCall and Cascade) is one (if not the most) of the ruggedness areas in the lower US. You can be 30 miles from a road. It is rugged country with steep, rough trails and lots of trees! I was a smokejumper in central Idaho (50 years ago) and can attest to the difficulty of hiking out with a 110 pound duffel bag on your back (no load bearing packs).

I wonder how the deer and elk are doing there nowadays, with respect to the wolves.
Does anyone know if that country ever was good for producing some of those monster mule deer Idaho turns out?

I wonder the same thing. I talked with a USFS ranger in Elk City (ID) 6 years ago and he said the wolves are killing a lot of elk, especially calves. He said that he was walking his dog one night when the dog started to whimper and he turned around and saw a wolf (in the flashlight beam) following them on the road about 30 feet away . He said that he started to carry a shotgun on the walks.

The Southern part of the wilderness area was well known for producing huge elk and maybe an occasional moose........before the introduction of the Canadian wolf to the area. I know some old guys who used to run cattle and hunt elk in there before the area was first designated "Primitive Area".

About twelve years ago I took my son and his high school buddy on a three day horse pack trip into that Southern part. And we have made several day trips in on foot. We saw cow elk all over the place in the lush meadows. We saw no calves. The cows would spot us moving on our horses at as much as 3/4 mile away and RUN back into the brush and cover.

I had never seen game behave that way, especially around the Fourth of July, far removed from any open season.

We did hear wolves howl every night.

Here are a few pics I grabbed which depict the terrain which we were in.

Ah, here he is. A little jack salmon.

The local information board claims these salmon swim more miles upstream than any others in the world.

I think that DiMagio was a bit further North, and the TV photo coverage showed that the terrain there was more rugged than the areas I have traversed.

CASCADE, Idaho -- As the investigation continues, federal authorities have offered few details on how the man suspected of kidnapping 16-year-old Hannah Anderson was shot and killed Saturday by a member of an FBI search team at a remote central Idaho campsite.

Authorities refused to discuss at a news conference whether James Lee DiMaggio, 40, was armed or whether he even had access to weapons when he was killed near Morehead Lake, about 75 miles north of Boise. The location was just a few miles from where DiMaggio and Hannah were spotted by a horseback rider on Wednesday.

The agent and the search team were alerted to DiMaggio and the teen by searchers scouring the area in a plane. Because of the ongoing investigation, authorities said they could not divulge any specific details about the tactical operation.

But a source familiar with the investigation said that DiMaggio appeared to be trying to build a makeshift bunker at the time he was killed.

An FBI review team was dispatched from Washington, D.C., to Idaho to conduct its own probe of the shooting and determine exactly what happened. This is standard procedure any time an FBI agent discharges a firearm in the line of duty, officials said.

When kidnappings like this occur, no one ever really knows where the investigation will lead, said Mary Rook, special agent in charge. In this case, our team faced a very challenging situation.

The rescue effort began Saturday afternoon when two U.S. Marshalls in a surveillance plane spotted two people who matched the descriptions of Hannah and DiMaggio near Morehead Lake, authorities said.

Smoke from nearby wildfires was making it difficult to see and fly, so the law enforcement commanders decided to send the FBIs Hostage Rescue Team in to get Hannah while they still could, authorities said.

The topography was so steep, helicopters had to drop off two separate teams far from the lake, officials said. It took both teams more than two hours to hike through the steep topography to get to the lake and surround the camp.

They also didnt want to alert DiMaggio they were coming, authorities said. Once the teams set up, they waited until DiMaggio and Hannah separated, and moved in.

The killing ended a tense, multi-state manhunt that began Aug. 4, when firefighters found the bodies of Hannah's mother and younger brother on DiMaggio's property east of San Diego, where his home was on fire. Ever since, police have been focused on Hannah, who authorities believed was abducted.

The case prompted officials in several Western states to send missing-children Amber Alert text messages to the public, which became transfixed by the massive manhunt.

"Hannah's safe, and that's the best outcome we were hoping for," Andrea Dearden, a spokeswoman for the Ada County Sheriff's Department, said during a Saturday news briefing.

After the shooting, Hannah was taken by helicopter to a hospital for evaluation. San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said at a news conference that she appeared to be in "pretty good shape" but gave no further details.

Search crews poured into this mountainous wilderness region late in the week, following two major breaks in the case. First, a man riding horseback on Wednesday spotted hikers believed to be the missing pair.

MAP: Key locations in rescue effort

The witness said the man and teenage girl had a tent and backpacks but looked out of place in the rugged terrain. The rider said nothing else seemed particularly unusual, so he continued on. "They exchanged pleasantries, and he left the area thinking they were hiking and camping," Dearden said.

Once the rider got home, he found out about the Amber Alert, prompting him to contact the Idaho State Police, she said.

Then, on Friday morning, DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa, featured prominently in the alerts, was found at the edge of a remote trail head. It was "the last place you can go before you hit the wilderness and stop driving," Dearden said. The car's license plates had been removed, but authorities confirmed it was DiMaggio's car by a check of its vehicle identification number. For a time, authorities worried that DiMaggio might have planted explosives in the car, but none was found.

The hunt focused on a roughly 300-square-mile swath of rugged terrain. A haven for wolves, bears and mountain lions, the area is so remote that some searchers had to be flown in, while others engaged in the hunt on horseback. By Saturday afternoon, roughly 200 local and federal law enforcement officers were combing the federally protected hillsides. Eventually, with air crews circling the skies, a pair of U.S. marshals in a surveillance plane spotted DiMaggio and the teen at a campsite.

DiMaggio was said to be an experienced outdoorsman who had joined the family on camping trips. Authorities say he had recently purchased backpacking equipment -- a sign, they said, that the abduction may have been planned.
