So i had the opportunity to pick up some 7828 SSC last month and passed. Then some regular 7828 came up this week and i picked it up. I know that IMR says that the data is interchangeable but have you guys noticed a difference?

Im more directing this question at how the SSC will settle and allow more powder to be used. If you use the same charge in the regular and then switch to the SSC there will be more void space and i was curious if this would effect anything.

If you weigh charges, of course, it'll be the same regardless of whether you're using standard or short cut. As for "void" space, you're correct that the SSC will settle more efficiently than the standard cut, but I'd think that any difference in pressure due to the additional unused case volume would be negligible and beyond the ability of the average rifle/shooter to discern.

I'm just guessing, but I'd be surprised if the converse were true.

I load 7828 in my 06-AI. My load is heavily compressed. To reduce some of this compression I picked up a pound of SSC. It was noticeably less compressed. Velocity was on par with 7828, but accuracy went all to hell. I went back to my heavily compressed 7828 loads and all is well, accuracy is back and my pound of SSC it just another dust collector.

I loaded the first of my loads with it tonight....

Hoping to get out and test it sometime this week but i dont have and SSC to compare it to. Just thinking for the future.

The loads i did in my 7mm WSM were about %95+ if not more. They were not compressed loads.

That is what happened to me with the SSC. I tried the regular cut first and was really happy with it and I figured the SSC would give me a little more room but my gun didn't like it at all with the 160 gr Accubonds anyway. I am going to try it with some other bullets and see if I can find a use for it .. if not I have an 8# keg of the stuff. I have 3 Grand sons coming of age in a few so I figure it will go down range some how.

I have a 7 Mag and got just the opposite. My load with 7828 was accurate but when I tried 7828 SSC it was even better. My original 7828 load was not compressed and you're right, SSC does occupy less room.

I have also had better accuracy from a couple of rifles with the long version, even though the loads are compressed.

The ssc has worked well for me in several rifles that I used to use long cut in.
I'm running right around 85 grains ssc in my tikka 300 win under a 130 ttsx for 3550 fps and tiny groups wt 200 yds. I'm sure I couldnt cram anywhere near that w/regular 7828.

When 7828 became available in the early 80's I purchased two twenty pound kegs and still have a fourth of the second one. All the loads I worked up at that time were acceptable and when it is all used up I will try the SSC if it is better, equal, or worse. Future purchases will be based on my finding at that time. SSC would be more convenient if it works the same or better.
