Got sombody wanting to trade me a rem model 7 in 308. Wood stock,simmons scope. In real nice shape. Whats one worth? Im not sure about these, are they any good?

Might want to find out a bit more. There were original 18.5" walnut models with the Schnabel forend and also 20" walnut CDL models with a faux-ebony black forend tip.

I've got one of the 18.5 inch models in 260Rem that I really like. Its a short, handy rifle with good accuracy with what little I have shot it, which is factory ammo only. I got mine cheap at a pawn shop locally and have since replaced the wood stock with a synthetic takeoff I bought on here and painted. They seem to bring a premium price here on the fire, especially in stainless or 260Rem.

This one is the 18.5 with schnable forend

I'd not go over $475-500, considering the scope. They can be made to shoot, even with those pencil barrels.

If it's an original one in good shape I would allow $500-550 and feel comfortable , the scope docent add anything.

It'll fetch $500 quick....I've had about 6 Model 7's in .308 and all were shooters. I still have one with the 18.5" bbl that shoots just about any 150 or 165 gr bullet into tiny bugholes. No bedding, etc... It did get a trigger job.

The model 7 is oneof the all time best factory rifles.ihave sveral, and just bought my oldest boy a 243 today.

Buy it, youll be glad you did.

I have 2 in 7-08,18.5".The only thing I do not like,is the safety,when you push it to fire it is loud.

"Quiet" aftermarket 3-position safeties are alive and well.

Have killed several deer in spitting distance, never had a problem. Usually hold down on the safety with my thumb and slide it forward instead of pushing it if I'm worried about noise

That's what I do too.

OH GREAT! ...... Now I gotta buy one of them too.

Do they come in stainless?

Yeah, I am so worried about noise I leave the safety off...


'course I have to work the bolt before firing... but have never found that a real problem...

Picking it up tomorro

I picked up a older M7 in .308 with 18.5" barrel a few weeks ago. Thinking I want to load this for my son who is shooting rimfire now. Thinking this may have too much recoil/muzzle flash in standard loads was wondering if anyone has reduced loads for a short barrel for one to learn to shoot? BTW my son is 10 years old...

BTW...guys I was thinking of getting the Ruger American in .243 per Jim in Idaho's post on him buying an American. But I just have not yet gotten over the looks of the American. I am used to rifles in the traditional sense like wood stock and blued...like what you see in the Winchesters and Remington and Rugers. Cannot get over the newer rifles with thosechanges made to the looks. So this is why I bought this M7...maybe I goofed and have to go get a Ruger American down the road.

For a reduced load try IMR SR4759. I found a load with 150gr Power Points that shoots about 2000 fps and my small frame 11 year old daughter loved shooting it. Accurate as well although point of impact was several inches lower than a full velocity load.
