I took some pics, they are not real good but you can get a general idea of what my knives are. Let me know what you think, I'm a big boy I can take it.[Linked Image] [Linked Image] [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

The last one looks kind of radical but I'm sure it would do it's job. Just doesn't look like what we are used to seeing around here.

Top one is pretty cool. I might like it better without the mirror finish. Maybe a bead blast or stonewash.

Combo pack I like. Some fancier wood and I'd like it even more.

Snakeskin one is very cool--- looks and pattern. I dig it.

Last knife I wouldn't have much use for.

All the sheaths look good to me. Snakeskin one looks better than good.

Overall, very nice looking work IMO.........

Thanks for all the feed back. I appreciate your comments. FYI the snake knife is actually stabalized corn cob, the sheath is prarie rattler by Parsons. The bottom knife is kind of an EDC knife with kydex and a teck lock. I wear mine horizonzl on my waist and when you need a knife in a hurry its right there. Most of my knives are D2 treated by Paul Bos and ground on a 12" wheel.

I like the combo pack, what does something like that run with orange G-10 or micarta?

Actually I am a little disapointed in the durability of the corn cob. I am used to anything stabalized being hard and durable. I would not recomend this knife for hard use, which i hate. My first priority in building a knive is to have a finnish product that can take some abuse in the feild.

The lines of the "corn cob" knife are very nice. That is my favorite by far.

I'd like that small knife (last pictured) with black micarta scales - to match my Ruger Vaquero's Birdshead grips.

Also with a simple black leather sheath with logo:

Slaughterville is a small comunity where I grew up and still own the family farm there. Its about 15 miles south of Norman Oklahoma. There are many tall tales of how it got its name, but the boring truth is, in the mid 1800's Jim Slaughter open the first general store in the area. And my wife thought it made a really cool brand for knives. Here is a couple more to check out. [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

And that answers my next question, durability of it.

The pattern of that knife is still great though, IMO.....

Jantz supply is doing their own stabilization on corn cob at their shop. Once I started working down I realized it was not what I had hoped, but it looks really different, hate to tear it off. I thought if you stablized a sponge it would be hard as a rock and take a good shine, Maybe its a different process. If anyone else has any experience with this let me know.

After we get the boning knife done I want one of those with orange scales. 5/32 D2 would be pretty fun to use with that shape.

My field knives are all pretty close to that size and shape. They do all the gutting, skinning and quartering.

Same heat treat/temper as the big one you made for me?

Same heattreatment. This shape is one I designed for myself. I have seen others that are close but not the same.
With this knife and a little practice, you can go butt hole to chin in one smooth pass. It has a good radius for skinning and enough heft to rip through the sternum. Edge retention is excellent.

Spalted Tamarid. When I got ahold of that block of wood I couldn't sit still until I got it in a knife. I know I'm not good at pitchers, and this picture does not do it justice.

Yup sold a couple. But had to put the money back in for supplies. There was a few guns that had me about to piss myself, but somehow I was able to hold it together and left them alone. It was a good little show. Would have luvd it if you could have made it down.

Been learning to taper tangs with a little instruction from Rick. Here is one that turned out good. I wanted to see how thin I could go but chickened out at .020

Just remember Dale that when you put liners and scales on that tapered tang it will appear twice as thick as it looked bare. Rick shoots for the optimum.

I dunno Mike, although I realize I have a biased opinion, it still looks pretty thin to me. Not Menefee thin. The only other person I personally knew that tapered that thin was
George Englebtretzen.

great job on the taper. Trick is getting to where you can do it as fast as Rick does. I swear he can taper a tang in about 3 minutes. Just flat pisses me off, but he's also got the only turbo charged grinder I've ever seen. That sucker raises the temperature in the room 5 degrees when he turns it on.

Tired of the hassles of etching, so I got a stamp. This one is not as deep as I would have liked, but still like it better than the etch. I'm building a larger press that should do the trick.

I like your new stamp. Looks good. Rick says those real knife guys (collectors) really go for the stamps more so over etchings.

Well there were two reasons for the stamp. I got tired of etching with the set up the chemicals and the clean up. And I wanted a better look to the finished product. I know I have a high quality knife with an excellent steel proper heat treat. But showing knives on here up against Menefee Miller Dowell Ingram and some of the others I need all the help I can get. I hope to someday be in that caliber of makers.

dale i think that is a real nice taper;trying to get a perfect super thin tang simply means at first you are going to blow thru lots of knives.having watched menefee do this process i realized it has a lot of expearance behind it. cranky72

I like everyone else have an azzhole and an opinion. the trick is to share your opinion without being an azzhole. There are many fantastic knife steels out there. Asking a group of knife makers witch steel is best is probably like ask the hunters sitting around the campfire which caliber kills deer better. I personally got hooked on D2 years ago. Its seems to be a work horse that is reasonable to grind, reasonable to sharpen and holds an edge very well. IMHO D2 is the perfect compromise between carbon and stainless having the best qualities of both. But for the kitchen I like 154 and yes 440c, for the higher stain resistance. As far as grading steel, I wouldn't know where to begin. There are a lot of steels I have never tried, and never will. i believe the perfect steel is when the right steel is matched with the right grind, the right heat treatment and matched to the use for witch it is intended. Where do my knives fit in?? I know I build a quality knife that holds an edge very well, My grinds and finishes are improving. To this date I have never had an unhappy customer, that I know of. My knives may not be right for everyone, but for what I build knives for---they'll get the job done.

This is my testament for D2. I built this knife for myself July 2012 as an EDC. Knowing that this knife was going to be horrifically abused, I left the grind a little thick, and did chisel tanto point. I do commercial air conditioning, so this knife has done things that would curl your toes, intentionally testing its limits. Yes its been duller than a pole ax. and had small chips in the blade, but like I said it has been pushed beyond extreme use. I have been quite satisfied with its performance. Here are photos of new and current.

Perhaps a little off topic, but I noticed your EDC and that you said you do AC work.

Between 2000 and 2008, before I came to my senses I had 85 manufactured homes that I did all the maintenance on. So that's 85 A/C units, (combination split and package), 170 toilets, 85 hot water heaters (combination of gas and electric)........ well perhaps you get the picture. These were located in 5 different trailer parks. Sometimes in the summer I would drive 250 miles a day and service 5 different a/c units among the other emergencies that sprang up while I was there fixing a unit. I can't tell you how many times a day I use a knife.

This Boker top lock has been my daily carry since 2003.

[Linked Image]

It is a full auto Boker.

Seems I'm usually in a nine-line bind when I need a knife, and two hand open is not an option.

It fills the hand perfectly

I bet it's opened well over 2000 bottles of Negra Modelo.

Misplaced for about a month during deer season last year. Felt like I'd lost a body part.

I like the stamp and agree with you, the stamp seems a much better option then etching. I am about to order one for myself and have a couple of questions...

1) where did you buy it from
2) how long did it take to get
3) would you order again from them

Thanks,

7 7/8 OAL 3 1/4 edge 5/32 D2 Deep hollow grind 12" wheel.
The notch has sorta evolved. It started out as a small nick, until one day I got a little carried away. I finished the knife with the black and toxic green and Kydex sheath. I was showing it to a survival type feller, and he said the notch looked like it would fit a feral rod (fire starter). First pull it pull such a large spark it set the carpet on fire. So there it is.

Still think this is a kick-a$$ design. Think of this design with some of those neon green G-10 scales and thick black liners...or with natural canvas micarta scales and thick yellow liners.

Well Danny, I have one with black and toxic green glued up and 1with yellowish makarta and yellow liners ready to vlue up and one with the yellowish makarta and black liners teady to glue up. All with tapered tangs in that same pattern. One not decided on the scales yet. And 4 others of a different pattern I havent scaled yet. I'm always open to suggestions. Trying to get ready ffor the Wannamaker show. Menefee has been nudging me to do more tapered tangs. Monday night I set my mind to it and tapered 9tangs and didnt even have to toss one. (Sigh of relief).

Well,Atkerson just in>>>>
Dale sent this D2 knife today,I saw a picture of this and liked it. It has the Parsons pocket clip sheath witch is in itself a heavy duty tool. But Dale I gotta say,you have a very impressive ,unique design here. This knife is somewhere in between small& regular, but the handle allows for a really good grip. This would make a nice hunter/ skinner ,but also,a heavy duty compact EDC work knife. OAL on this is 6-3/8". Blade is 3" with 2-3/4" cutting edge. If you guys could sample this I think Dale would have more orders for this one knife than he could ever keepup with. Freakin wicked razor sharp, and his grind is perfect. Very nice one Dale, ThankYou. I think too,the sculpted g-10 handles you do would really be great on this model.

Sun glare will get you every time ,taking knife pics but these will work

I picked that up on one of my trips to Jantz, it was on the reminant table. They couldn't say what it was other than it didn't match anything they had. looked to cool to leave there.
If I was going to guess, I think I might lean toward black ash burl.

For some reason I've got that macarta that I picked up for us in my head. I really like the yellowish color like on Vince's knife.
But I do have the redwood burl and a bocote in the works. Trying to get ahead for the Wannamaker show in Tulsa next week end. Did really well last fall.

Here's a sample of what I have for the table at Tulsa. As usual, sorry for the crappy pictures. If I do good it Tulsa maybe I can afford a new camera.

Redwood Burl that Dale Howe stabilized for me, and some Bocote I found that I've had for about 15 years.

wow, fantastic. Said Rosewood before, but meant redwood. Beautiful stuff. That came out really great. Great looking knife too. Is that D2? suspect that won't be on the table long at the show...

I've never seen anyone get a nicer finish on D2 that Dale does. That is some hard stuff to get a slick finish on and he finishes it out better that any I've seen.

Made it to the Wanenmacker show, got to chat with some friends and look around a bit. Got to meet a campfire member for the first time (Badley)said he was good friends with the Menefee clan, but I won't hold that against him. Sold a knife before I finished un packing, feels like its going to be a good show. Never fails to amaze me at the size of this show.

Had a helluva good.time at the Wanenmacher show. Started out slow Saturday and Sunday morning, but after noon it went very well. Sold 5 knives in the last hour. Being too hardheaded to pack up early paid off. People really do come fom all over the world. I jave knives going three other states and 1going to the land down under.

I Got this one finished up for my daughter for Christmas. I owe a big thanks to a couple of guys who helped me pull this off. j Dale Howe answered my need for pink G10 in the darker color. Don't know why they quit making it. And Rick Menefee for the pattern.
