An 8-year-old Florida boy was suspended from school after using his finger as a pretend gun while playing cops and robbers with his friends.

Jordan Bennett was suspended for a day after administrators at Harmony Community School in Harmony, Fla., said the gesture was an act of violence, WFTV.com reported.

His mother, Bonnie, told the station she's concerned that her son may labeled violent with a suspension now on his academic record.

"He had nothing in his hand. It was a finger gun, a pretend gun," Bonnie Bennett said. "He didn't threaten violence. He didn't utter words that were inappropriate. He made a sound and used his fingers and that was it."

School district officials told the station its code of conduct prohibits students from playing with invisible guns. Bonnie Bennett believes there are more effective ways the district could have disciplined her son.

"If he would have written an essay about why it was inappropriate, what he did, that would have made more of an impact," she said.

The school district told WFTV.com that, due to student confidentiality, it cannot comment on Jordan's specific case.

Last month, two seventh-grade students in Virginia Beach, Va., were handed long-term suspensions that will last until the end of the school year for playing with an airsoft gun in one of their front yards while waiting for the school bus.

In the Virginia incident, the school defended the suspensions, arguing that its so-called "zero-tolerance" policy on guns extends to private property, according to a WAVY-TV report.

I'm thinking that this should have been aired on station "WTF-TV". If you don't want kids doing these things, they shouldn't be exposed to any of it. How about we start banning books, history, movies/videos, vid-games, etc?

A funny counterpoint is that I'll go to work this morning and be greeted by a colleague, a language arts teacher who is about as far as one can get from being a hunter type. She'll open her doors with keys which hang off a key strap on which she proudly sports a 300 Win Mag key fob.

That kid is just going to have to leave that finger at home in the future before entering public school property.

Goodbye common sense. It has been eliminated from all public schools.

If boys grow up without TV and are home schooled they will still be boys. By that I mean they will pick up a twig and point with it. It is natural and you cannot stop it without mentally scaring the child. I watch this with my two grandsons. It is what boys do.

Schools today, run by ultra liberals have a goal of emotionally emasculating our boys before they become men. I am glad I am old. I have no desire to live long enough see the the results of these actions.

All these little ones will soon be voting to Scott, hope i'm dead by then.

Yes they will and it may well be uglier than it is now.

The boy with the finger gun kind of reminds me of the application of the old "pluck yew" story.

Wish there was a way to gather millions of these boys take em out to the farm for a hell raising, shooting, fishing, working weekends, show em what a man does, and what they need to be doing someday, instead of the socialist brainwashing they get at public schools.

I don't mean natural brown skin colored, I mean painted black.

And was it a "pew, pew, pew"?, a "pewpewpew!"? or a "pthththththththt-tew!" (with spit sprinkles)?

We do that here at the farm. Have taken our interns shooting, most of them for the first time. One of the grandsons I watched pick up a twig and start shooting with it when he could hardly stand on his own bet me with my own gun at last years bowling pin shoot. It wasn't that I was having an off day, he would have beat be on my best day and he had never fired a 1911 before.

There were a lot of fine young men launching pins off the tables that day. The libs have not put a band around all young men's nuts but they sure are trying.

10-4 and good on ya for doing that Scott, same here in getting them the rifles scopes fishing rods and so on for many years now, I fear it has been a wasted effort on my part though, I can't possibly reach enough to swing the tide.

Since the beginning of mankind, normal boys have gravitated toward weapons and transportation...spears, bows, guns, horses, cars, etc. Normal girls have gravitated toward home life..children, cooking, etc. It's the way we're programmed and nothing can change us, but they're trying.

Just make school uniforms mandatory. They all wear dresses and they all have to sit to pee.

If it saves one life isn't it worth an entire nation of young children not playing cop/robbers or cowboy/Indians like I did when I was a kid? Sarcasm intended....

I like my finger guns full auto with spit speckles flying and numb lips.
