That's a pretty important digit. I know of a fella that had his thumb mangled beyond repair. He now sports a big toe on that hand.
Thankfully,you'll heal just fine.

Glad it was no worse. That's one reason the Lord invented push sticks.

Had one. It was the other hand that I had past the saw to pick up the board as it came through. Got my glove too close and the saw grabbed it and jerked by thumb into the blade. I will not wear gloves again using the saw. miles

thanks goodness it was sewable. I'm teaching some 10th graders today on the safe use of powertools. If you don't mind I'll show what can happen.

Glad I can help in some way. Be sure to warn about the gloves and loose clothing. I always make sure my sleeves are out of the way but never thought of the gloves although I should have. I have made holes in them using a grinder before but did not get meat with it. grin miles

Miles:

I bet everyone who has used a table saw very much has learned that same lesson. I have. If you keep it covered with Neosporin and replace the bandages every day it will heal fine in about a month. Don't let it get infected.

I am just now retiring from a career as a cabinetmaker and finish carpenter. While I have had one extremely minor nick from a tablesaw, I still have all ten, and no missing parts or even scars. That said, I am glad I am retiring as one of the largest General Contractors in the state requires all workers to wear gloves. Wearing gloves while working on a tablesaw is just plain stupid, and it appears that the OP is now in agreement. Gloves do not protect fingers from a spinning blade, quite the contrary.
The only thing they will protect is the hands from splinters.

For God's sake, Miles, be careful--they don't grow back! Wishing you a speedy recovery and full function, my friend.

I won't use gloves running any power equipment with a blade or chain.

Many years ago I got my left pinkie in a battle with the table saw, table saw didn't even blink. You might have a little less feeling in the thumb but by the looks of it you'll still be able to use it normally.

Speedy healing.

Were you using a pusher...other than your thumb...?

Oops...saw that you were using a pusher. Glad you didn't get hurt any worse than you did.

In addition to gloves around machinery, reaching beyond the blade on a table saw is something I bark about constantly to my crew.

Glad to see you have something to sew back together.

milespatton;
I don't often tell folks that I might know how they feel because I don't empathize all that well in general.

Your photos make me wince and make my eyes water quite badly however because about a dozen years ago now I did what Rancho Loco said not to do and reached in front of the table saw blade. I used no feather board that day as I was too lazy to set it up for the one quick cut I had to do. crazy

Anyway after the kickback I'd managed to almost blow three of four fingers off my left hand - well I did remove a chunk of the little finger too just so it wouldn't feel left out.

So that said sir, I wish you a speedy recovery and that you also recover full use and feeling of your thumb.

All the best to you and yours and good luck on your hunts this fall too.

Regards,
Dwayne
