I know once upon a time Leupold made the VariX III. I know they now make the VX-3. Was there ever a VX III ??. Anybody have a good timeline on the various "III" vs "3" designated scopes??

Very interesting question - also interesting would be the changes for each incarnation.

Referencing the 92 to 98% differences in light transmission, how does that translate into a usable data point. I have a circa 2001 VariX-III 1.75X6X32 and wondering if it's worth spending the money to replace it and how much of a gain in hunting light I can expect/

There are inaccuracies in the chart. For example, early Vari-X III models (even a bit into the click adjustment era) did not have Multicoat 4. There was also a split in the VX-II period with early ones getting Multicoat 4 only on external lens surfaces, while later production got it throughout.

Thanks for the chart RDF. Looked all over the Leupold website without seeing it.

Communicated earlier with Leupold about a couple of issues:
1) Anti-fog products
Quote
Of the brands that have been tested here in our Optics Lab, Kleer Vu has shown
to give the best results without degrading light transmission.
Kleer Vu can be reached at:

2) Custom Shop lead time for a new VX-3 Matte with Heavy Duplex

All I want is either a 2.5-8 or 3.5-10 Matte finish with Heavy Duplex. Lead time is 4 to 6 weeks. Guess I'll just put that on my Christmas Want List. But they don' try to rob you on price. For example, the 2.5-8x36 has a direct from the Custom Shop base price of $399.99 which is pretty much street price. HD adds $34.98 and there's a $20 Custom Shop handling fee. Not sure about shipping, didn't get that far. But thought it decent of them to not try charging list price.

And another thing available is Faded Anodized Color. Check out the fade from Gunmetal Gray to Black. Way cool. But that's another $119 and a 14 to 16 week lead.

Leupold didn't change any of the designations but made significant upgrades in 2011. I have a 2012 VX-2 that is a better scope than a 2005 VX-3. They upgraded the entire lineup and VX-2's are essentially older VX-3's, but selling at VX-2 prices. Even the VX-1's essentially became older VX-2's and now have click adjustments.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.
