what can you tell me about these? Ive found a decent one, for a decent price at a decent gunshop I was in the other day. looks to be a 16" barreled rifle in .44 mag that was manufactured in 2000. the only reason I didn't buy it on the spot is that it's ported which seems absolutely unnecessary to me in a .44? anyone have any experience with one of these?

.

The 1894P was only made for two years, and makes a great Scout-type rifle with the XS LeverScout Mount.(see uppermost rifle, below)

They are VERY handy, enabling the hunter to carry it one-handed while threading through heavy brush, etc - w/o the muzzle getting anywhere near the ground.

The porting isn't an issue when zeroing/practicing, since earmuffs are a must at most ranges.

I never noticed any difference when shooting @ game, since I usually focus/concentrate on the game target to the exclusion of everything else except the target's background (for hunter safety).

The 1894P's are hard to find today, in decent condition, and will usually bring about $700 in a NY Minute.

I don't have a P in 44, but do have the CP in .357 and love it. Not unusual for me to get 1" at 50 yards and 2" at 100. They are a dream to shoot and though they don't need the porting, follow up shots when necessary are very quick.

Good luck with the buy.

Just fine - minute of deer ear.

IMO, the bbl length doesn't have a whole lot to do with accuracy - especially with a scope mounted.
