Not at all.

In a modern action, loaded to 30-06 pressures, the 7x57 is a fine performer. At 54 KPSI, I get 2750 FPS with 162 grain bullets, in a 24" barrel. The 7x57 and 270 are nearly ballistic twins.

Book on the 7x57 is only 51k. At 54k you would be above book, and you might blow yourself up!! laugh

Book on the .270 Win is 65k, so load data actually reflects the capabilities of the rifles.

I was just out this past weekend trying this.

Bullet was a Hornady 139 BTSP, rifle was a Zastava 7X57 with 24" barrel.

40 grains of RL-15 gave just at 2400 fps, avg for 4 shots was 2396 fps. 39 and 40 grains both printed groups with three shots touching and my signature %&*#$%!! flyer. wink

Also 39 to 40 grains of IMR 4895 gives low to mid 2400 fps velocity but in my rifle accuracy wasn't nearly as good as with the RL-15 loads.

Recoil is very mild as you would expect.

I could tell a difference between 20-22gr of Blue Dot with 120's and 31gr of H4198 and 110's (7mm-08). The Blue Dot loads were softer and quieter. That being said, not everybody is comfortable using a powder that you could possibly double charge.

IMR or H4895 should be good. I see it suggested often for reduced loads. I have used it for fire forming 280AI cases and it works well. I've read and believe that it's never a good idea to use slow burning powder for reduced loads and in rare instances can even be dangerous.

Run a .280AI reamer into the chamber, crisis resolved.

RevMike,

Here are some starters from Loaddata using 139-140 grain bullets:

IMR 4895, 24.5 gr, 2,420 fps

AAC 2520, 31.4 gr, 2,050 fps
AAC 2620, 42.0 gr, 2,605 fps

RL 19, 41.0 gr, 2,040 fps

RL 22, 44.8 gr, 2,180 fps

Hope this helps.

Ben
