Recent visit to Alabama for a hunt and the landowner showed me his 40X in 222. It was left to him by an uncle and came with no accessories. I took photos of underside of forearm and hope some one can steer me as to what to look for to equip the rifle with perhaps a hand stop and target sling swivel. I have a Win 70 target model in 308 and am familiar with the Freeland products but mine will not fit the 40X the base is different. Any help would be appreciated .

This is a 40-X (earlier model) and the correct hand stop is round, approximately 3/4" thick and about 1 1/2" in diameter. It's been a while since I looked at any of mine but there is a threaded bushing that is inserted through the slot and under the rail. Then the screw that goes through the hand stop screws into the bushing pinching the rail to hold it in position.

There is another factory hand stop that is contoured to better fit the hand. Both types pop up on Gunbroker and Ebay on occasion and both types have a swivel attachment for a sling.

There's an early version on Gunbroker right now but it's missing the screw/swivel assembly and the bushing that goes under the rail in the stock. But at least you can see what it looks like.

If you aren't concerned about having one that's correct for the period the contoured one made for the 40-XB will also work and is much more comfortable. Freeland makes an even bigger one that would be even more comfortable than either of the factory versions.

I think I have a sling swivel that will fit your 40x. Send me a PM if your still looking since you posted this a month ago and I just noticed it.
