I posted in the Gunsmithing forum; but, I got no response, so I thought I would post the same question here. I just picked up a Marlin XS7 in a multi gun trade. It is a 243. I already have a couple of 243s so I was considering a barrel swap. I have been researching it and have made the assumption that the barrel swap is a simple thing, relatively speaking, similar to Savage. Is this correct? If so, what does it take? I will continue my research; but, thought I would post here to get direct input. I have come across numerous sites discussing using Savage barrels and subsequent ensuing discussions as to the interchangeability of Savage barrels on the Marlin XS7 action. However, the Savage to Marlin is not my concern. As of right now, I would like to know if the swap (one Marlin barrel for another) is a simple screw out/screw in? Special tool needed, etc.? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Barrel wrench, headspace gauge, and vise block are all that's needed as I understand it.

"dangerous dan" on the marlin owners forum is a gunsmith and has done ALOT of work swapping barrels and other such things with the Marlin "X" guns. Check the forum out and send him a PM or pose your question there.

Same as the savage rifle. You need to check bolt head to barrel breech clearance, as this is important. Must have .008- .012" clearance. Easy to check, and can be done before installing barrel.

Here's an nice article from DD.

If your really crazy you can do this:

I bought a shaw barrel, prefit and chambered for savage small shank, as part of a group-buy with Dangerous Dan for my XS7. He turned the breech end back 10 thousanths then sent it to me. It spun on just like any savage barrel switch, and it shoots great. I bought an unfinished Boyd's seconds stock for $65 and I now have a very reasonably priced custom Marlin XS7 284 win.

That turned out nice.......especially the stock.

Attention to detail.......and it shows.

With regards to the stock what 'foot print' does the Marlin use?

Again, very nice build.
Hope it shoots as good as it looks.
