Back up scope is a 4X M8 with heavy duplex, same rings.

I'm shooting my reloads with RL-15 and the Barnes 270 Gr. TSX bullet. With this load I'm good for anything from Impala to Cape Buffalo. I have a 416 Rigby for Elephants. JB filed the brass bead to about a 45 degree angle. Works great. I have no idea why a mule deer & black bear hunter has a .375, let alone two of them, but I do. I like the cartridge. Guy

Set up a couple different ways: Leupold QRW'S and leupold steel bases: The VX3 1.5-5 didn't have enough magnification for my tastes, so I upped the x's a bit (Zeiss 3.5-10x44): I also believe the 375 needs cross bolts so I got a different stock (even though the original was nicer). This is a stronger stock and will not crack out like the original did: I also decided to chit can the QRW's and go with the permanent mount PRW's...Still using the same steel bases, but different rings.. I have a new 375 Alaskan, with Talley low QD's. I have a Zeiss HD5 3-15 with the lock turrets on it. It's setup as a do everything rifle. I will eventually buy a wide backup scope if I ever get a chance at Africa or something, but right now, the 3 power on this scope is about the same as it is on the Leupold 2.5-8 that has been so successful for so many people, and I can use 10x on the scope and have the eye relief very generous. The 15x I have found useful at the range, so overall, the package is really flexible. But it depends on what you have planned for the rifle. Like I said, mine is a 'one gun for all' solution, but your vision might be different.

Next time, a 2.5x8x32 zeiss will be applied. Talley steel QR rings. The felt recoil isn't bad, this was my first time ever behind a .375. Very pleased with the rifle, and fine gentleman who sold it to me TDN.

Just changed the scope to a zeiss 4x32 conquest to help my not so good eyes.

Bighorn #8734229 03/31/14 Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 1,425 Saskatchewan M Model70Guy Campfire Regular Model70Guy Campfire Regular M Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 1,425 Saskatchewan I've got a Rem 700 Custom C with a 3-9 Zeiss Dia-vari in QRW rings, a Win 70 Alaskan with a 3.5-10 Leupold in Burris rings and a CZ 550 rebarrelled to .375 Weatherby carrying a 3.5-10 in Warne QDs. Theoretically I should change the Alaskan to QRWs some day. They are all sighted for 200 yards with the scopes, and to the top of the bead at 100 with the irons. That drops to the center of the bead at 200. Scopes haven't come off on a hunting trip yet, but the back-up plan seems worthwhile anyway. Last edited by Model70Guy; 03/31/14. Life begins at 40. My 235gn handloads are 1" high at 100 and 1" low at 200yds, giving me a point blank on pigs of over 200yds which is much further than I normally shoot them at (usually 25 to 50yds). I don't understand the reason for a set trigger on a "dangerous" game rifle either. My 9.3x62 is an older CZ with the adjustable single stage trigger and I really like it. It breaks very clean and is adjusted to 2 3/8 pounds and I get ample accuracy from that rifle (let's just say it's a consistent "sub moa" shooter)... I put a 2.5-10 Leica ER on my 375 ruger Alaskan (laminate stock version) with stainless medium ruger rings. I very much like the package and took it on a brown bear hunt last fall (not successful). Liked the combo so much decided to take a doe with it in the PA deer season.

Prior to the 2x7, it wore a Conquest 1.8x5.5, which was optically excellent but heavy and bulky. This year, I bought a Zeiss Conquest 2.5x8 off EBay. It is much smaller than the other Conquest and the eyebox is even better than the Leupy (which ain't too shabby on its own). It sits in Weaver rings which, with a coin, can be removed to gain access to the express sights. I'm going back to Africa next month for a dagga boy and more PG. The Whitworth and the Conquest combo should do well, I'm sure, especially with the redundancy of the Leupold as a back-up scope, as well as the factory express sights. Always tinkering..... I was hoarding when hoarding wasn't cool.

Idaho I have a Ruger Alaskan 375. I have killed 2 bull elk with it. It wore a Leupy 1.5-5 when I killed the elk in the Ruger rings. Since then I got rid of the Hogie stock and put it in a new Hawkeye synthetic. Also put a Leupy European-30 2-7 on it with Leupold rings. The scope came off a 358 Norma I no longer have, but it has my initials on the turret cap and an elk engraved on the objective bell courtesy of my wife and Leupolds custom shop. I usually shoot Hornady 270 SP for elk but I have some 250 Sierra gamekings loaded up I hope to smack a whitetail buck with this year.

I bought a Zeiss 1.2 - 5 x 32 IR Duralyt scope for it. The CZ shop has a Weaver rail that fits the dove tails on the magnum action, and I am trying to decide whether to use a rail with either Talley or Warne QD rings ... that way I think I should be able to share scopes with my other rifles (I know I will have to re-center.) Otherwise, I'll probably just use QD rings from Alaska Arms. In any event, I plan to send the CZ to AHR for his action/safety/trigger/ bolt job.

More bling than anything. Probably would not do it again. Those boyds are fine for a 375. I cut the forend short and hollowed out the forend and but to reduce weight. I like those stocks. No problems w/o checkering so I never did go ahead on getting that done.

Only extra I have is a second scope & rings. I use the Warne QD rings for both set ups, and both have always returned to zero. One holds a 2 x 8 and the other either a 2 3/4 or 4x power scope, depending on my mood. Some very nice rifles guys, haven't seen an ugly one yet. Phil Hey Phil .... Not sure the brand on those rings. Owned them a long time. The levers are a bit different than the current Warne but do look similar. They are all steel and have given me no trouble. Not sure I'd go with sights and QD rings again. The NECG sights were expensive and never used. Probably just as well to go with a spare scope in Weaver rings w/o the sights.

The only thing that keep me from it, right or wrong, was the lack of a floor plate. Yes, the views go 180... They seemed to be a very well laid out piece. Conduct is the best proof of character.

Went with a straight 6x Leupie and my reliable Talley QD mounts. It came finished very well in the action area. Nice movement to the magazine so no binding to worry about. The action area was we'll finished with a factory trigger at 3.5#'s so that needs no tweaking. Here it is all setup. It was 7# 9oz. out of the box. Set up this way its 8# 9 oz.. The muzzle diameter is .695" with a maximum magazine OAL of 3.640". A guy could do quite a bit of "constructive work" with this pair. Filling a freezer and a game room would be quite easy. The .308 Montana weighs in as it sits at 6# 0oz.. My home is the "sanctuary residence" for my firearms.

The first I still own, a Mark X Mauser that's had some work done to it. I cut and recrowned the barrel at 22", and fitted two stocks, one synthetic and one walnut. Dave Gentry installed one of his 3-position safeties, and D'Arcy Echols a set of NECG express sights. Have had various scopes on it, including a 4x28 Leupold and a 1.5-6x Bausch & Lomb, but right now it has one of the new-generation 3x20 Leupolds in Talley detachable rings. It has hunted both in North America and Africa, and the scope has worked fine on big game out to 300 yards. The other was a Ruger No. 1 that "GuyM" from the Campfire now owns and mentioned earlier in this thread. I never used it in North America except on prairie dogs, in preparation for an iron-sight-only safari in Botswana, using an NECG aperture sight and the factory front. In Africa it took my first Cape buffalo, and four plains game animals from impala to kudu at ranges out to 220 yards. I also used the No. 1 on a plains-game hunt in South Africa with a 1.75-6x Leupold, taking animals from springbok to gemsbok. Phil Phil, I have used Warne QD rings on my .375 Ruger Hawkeye African, and found them to be a bit 'loose'- got much more open groups with them than I had gotten with the stock Ruger rings. Before going to Africa this August, I took the Warnes off, and reinstalled the Rugers- I figure that if a scope needs to be quickly taken off, a quarter in my pocket to loosen the big mount screws would work just fine. As I have posted elsewhere recently, I suspect the culprit is the small, loose halfmoon keys that fit in the slots of the integral mount of the M77 Hawkeye. Anyway- i have two sets of Warne Maxima QD rings, Medium, very lightly used, that I will sell at a good price! The Warnes are a great product, and probably work just fine with lesser-recoiling calibers in the Ruger line. They just weren't up to the task for me- 2" groups with the Warnes vs. sub-moa groups with the Ruger rings was a no-brainer decision, but such an accuracy difference might not be of importance to other shooters. I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave....

I really liked the optics and called Leupold to find out if the scope could "hold up". They told me, absolutely will hold up, as their testing on the revolution line simulates 5,000 rounds of a 375HH in their "mangler" testing station, and they have absolutely no problems. One made a complete pass thru both shoulders and although the core separated from the jacket, it still passed thru the far side shoulder and kept going. The jacket, however, was found on the farside when we were skinning the bull out. I like the sierra's and will definitely keep using them. Nice rifle too, by the way.. The stock is a monte carlo version with a Pachmyer Decelerator and two steel crossbolts. The gun was reblued when I bought it so no harm making it right! I am sighted in 200 yards with the scope and 50 yards with the iron sights. The pre 64 Win 70 H&H actions are pretty limiting with scope choice when using the Leupold QRW Bases. I don't like extension rings. The QRW bases are very low profile and allow the use of factory irons in most applications. The Leupold QR base/rings are more forgiving as far as scope tube length, but the levers are shorter and hard to release, plus they are a good deal higher in profile. Been working on a custom, based on the M70 Classic Stainless. Added a Rock Creek #5, stainless, and chambered it in 375 Ruger. Using Sako 85 Black/Brown Bear sights and a Gentry barrel band swivel. It will sit in a McM Sako Hunter stock. This weekend I had it fluted. Fluting looks just like the fluting on the Sako 85 Black Bear/Brown Bear. Next steps include soldering the barrel band swivel in place, and then get a hold of my Cerakote guy and make arrangements to have the barreled action and bottom metal done in Graphite Black. I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.

Dakota 76 Safari with Leica 2.5-10 #4 reticle in QR talley rings, shoots 270 TSX on top of each other. One of my favorites! Has a Talley peep in a grip compartment that was fitted to the Dakota spec Talley bases when they built the gun.

It's a Mark-X Mauser action with a Shilen barrel chambered in .375 Epstein Magnum (equivalent to the .375 Ruger). Barrel and action work by RCBS back in the day. RCBS made the chamber matched forming and loading die sets at the same time. Stock was made by C.P. Donnelly. Scope was a Burris 3-9x in Burris mounts, since changed to a Leupold 1.5-5x Vari-X III. This combination is capable of 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with the Hornady 270 grain bullet. I built it at a time my buddy was into Alaska hunting. I had dreams of following his example, but life intervened and I got married instead - end of dream - beginning of new life, but I gotta cool rifle anyway.
