I am thinking about 125 Nosler BT and the 130 Barns and possibly some 150 Nosler BT loads.

What is your favorite or deer and hogs and possible elk?

most any standard .30-30 load, except of course you don't have to use flat point bullets. I would not try to load hotter than you would for a Model 94; the Contender isn't weak, but it's not as strong as say, a #1 or a High Wall.

I will look tonight and see if I can find the load I used with mine:

I am getting 2500 fps with a 150 Hornady SST out of a 23 inch .30-30 Ackley barrel with Varget. This year I plan to try a 125 Nosler BT.

Just picked off this 30-30 on GB but it hasn't arrived yet, so I'm interested in hearing some favorite load info also. (Missed a 25-35 barrel that was listed.)

Contender carbine prices have gone nutz!

25-35 Contender barrel

A 25-35, 7-30 Waters, & a 30-30 would be a pretty cool set!

I have the .30-30 AI and 7-30, but the .25-35 barrels I have seen were overpriced like the one you linked. Eventually I will find one at a reasonable price. I have three Contender frames and would like a deer barrel for each.

MGM in Utah will make you a great .25-35 barrel. Not cheap, but good. Mine is a 24" 1-in-10" twist, which seems to handle all the bullet weights well. I don't push the very light bullets very hard; just enough to duplicate the old .25-20 "WHV" loads.

I WOULDN'T use ANY light bullet for elk! I'd use 170s or 180s and keep the range down where a flat point is irrelevant. Plenty of elk have been taken with .30-30s, for sure. But I wouldn't push the range, and would wait for a decent shot.

(Yeah, I know I'm preachin' to the choir on a single shot forum! You guys KNOW all this.)

If I have any pocket change after I pay for my daughter's wedding, I just might call MGM and do that. I am craving a couple of pistol cartridges too. I want a .22 K Hornet in a 12 or 14 inch barrel and maybe a .17 Hornet.

Better "ear up" pretty good with a 12" Hornet barrel. I had one for a while. Even with plugs and muffs, it hurt.
My son used to test-fire used guns into a snail for a Gander Mountain store, including stuff like braked .350 Rem. Mags and .338s. He still talks about the blast from that little Hornet.

Nosler makes a .308 170 gr Partition for the .30-30. Might make a decent elk pellet.

Hello Doc,

Yes it is. FyrepowrX (Our resident 24 Hr. Campfire T/C expert), turned me onto these remarkable little scopes. Also know as the Leupold "Shorty". They're difficult to find as they were discontinued sometime in the 90's. They allow more light transmission than the 20mm tubes such as the 1-4, 1.5-5X's, but are just about as lightweight & small.

As per Trent Smith of Leupold, the Leupold model numbers are Matte is: 47193.
With a Heavy Duplex reticle it would be model number 47194.
Gloss with a regular duplex is a Model number 46404.
Gloss with a Heavy duplex would be a Model number 47192.

(But good luck Googling any of these model numbers.) Watch out for the 66385 as this is the model number of the longer "E Model" 1.75-6X that's still in production today.

If you get one, watch out! It's likely to become your favorite scope!

I've got a 20" Custom Shop .30-30 that shoots lights out with IMR-4895 and either the 130 TSX or TTSX. The Burris mini-scopes fit well on a carbine setup. Pictured is a 6x Burris, but I've run it with a 4x and 2-7 also.

Nice one. I like the old stocks much better than the new Monte Carlo ones.
