Have a MSR Pocket Rocket that does not shut off. When the flame adjustment valve is firmly seated, the stove continues to simmer. I find this unsafe, as the only means to shut off the stove is to blow out the flames, and then, the stove is still running fuel. It takes a while to cool, yet, you need to disconnect the fuel cannister to keep it from wasting fuel, which makes for another hazard as the stove tends to be hot enough to melt or ignite something if disconnected while still hot. If you're busy and forget to come back to the stove after it cools down, you may later find the cannister has run empty.

I intend to contact the manufacturer to see if they have a fix, but would like some input from anyone here having a similar experience with this stove. I purchased this stove new over a year ago, but it was not used until recently when this issue became immediately apparent.

Thanks smile

Gary:

I had that happen a few times over the years, while guiding clients and actively in the field. Kind of a pain-in-the-neck to deal with when it's either freezing or blowing or precipitating outside, like there's no tomorrow, But, remedying the MSR stove situation is rather easy. Just replace the O-ring(s) in the check-valve. It's a pretty simple fix, actually. Be sure to clean and dry everything before you put it all back together.

Never heard of that one before. The pocket rockets have there little quirks but reliability of the valves is not one of them. KOVEA of S. Korea makes them for MSR .They are will made little units, but sometimes contaminants/particles can get in the needle valve preventing full closure.

Obviously the best route would be to contact MSR. They are really good about customer service / QC and I am sure they would like to know about this issue.

Nix the idea of replacing the O-ring in the check-valve. I was thinking both versions of the Whisperlite. Sorry about that. In terms of the Pocket Rocket, you'll probably be able to do some tinkering, but refer to your instruction manual for that. Or, call the manufacturer or, call/visit a local REI store or Eastern Mountain Sports store. Store staff will be able to help you out.

Snow Peak is what I use, never had a minutes trouble. I bought this for my son as it fit within a cookset he uses for scouts. Stove stayed in its storage case in the bottom of a duffel bag since new. Decided to put it to use, and voila, the problem raised its ugly head!

I've used a Pocket Rocket a lot over the past five years with no problem but I'm wary of gas leakage on these stoves that sit right on the fuel canister. Could be dangerous.

Years ago I had a fuel leak on a similarly designed stove that caught fire. The leak was between stove and canister it screwed into. Heat on the canister rapidly increased the fuel leakage and the flames swirling around the fuel canister got four feet high.

I backed off, got behind a tree in case it exploded and let it burn itself out of fuel. I try to make sure such stoves have a good seal at the top of the fuel canister.

Don't recall the brand but think it was a Coleman or Coleman knock-off.

MSR customer service is great. I'd call them first. They will fix or replace no problem. Their customer service is located in Seattle. I took a 20 year old water purifier in with a broken part and they fixed it while I waited.
I have a pocket rocket and a $10 chinese knock off and have had no problem with either.
