Casey don't overlook the Steelforce Phatheads 100 grain. They are solid cut on contact and easily resharpened and fly like darts. I'll send you a couple to try out if you would like. Txt me if you want. It's a very strong head.

Really don't matter what you shoot if your going to swap to a Mathews... Arrow is just gonna hit them and then fall to the ground maybe leaving a small paper cut insicion on them, but probly want make it that deep. ...lol... sorry man I had too. Congrats on the tag.

whatever you use, I would NOT risk a mechanical. Just too many issues there that can pop up.

Personally I"d probably be thinking Slicktrick or Zwickey or Snuffer myself...

And I'd sure spend the money on lots of scouting time rather than buy a new bow at the last minute...it ain't the arrow, its the indian. Keep the bow, get a good head, shoot a LOT

I have pretty much decided on going fixed blade, because I agree on not risking it with a mechanical.

I'll be buying a used bow, cheap from a buddy. I tend to shoot Mathews bows, probably due to the single cam better then my dual cam bowtech.

And, with this tag I will be using a guide. I am not a very experienced elk hunter, and with this being one of the best tags in the country, I will be saving my pennies and hiring someone. I am normally a DIY guy, but I have waited for this tag for to long to try my luck on my own.

If properly tuned, there is no advantage to one over the other. Can understand favoring the grip on one particular bow over another.

I just was saying on the bow... I'd damn sure go with what I've been shooting rather than try to get used to a new one in 4-5 months basically. Just me personally. Whats familiar tends to work better for me in the heat of the moment.

I've used and killed 5 elk with the Magnus snuffers 100 gr. heads. Great penetration and a life time guarantee on the broadheads. If the broadhead gets damaged or broken, send it in and get a free replacement. What's not to like about that.

I will 2nd the slick tricks. 125 magnums. I have killed 7 bulls with the slick tricks and have been very impressed with them. Shot nearly completly lengthwise through a bull at 70 yds. Went in at the flank on the left side, and 6 inches of arrow and head were sticking out of the neck on the right side. I fubbed a shot at 20 and hit the bull too low. He was gonna die, but I figured if I could get one more in him even better.
I would stay away from any kind of expandables. I outfit 12 to 15 archery elk clients every year. Not wanting to get in the debate of expandable vs fixed. But I have seen way more bulls wounded with expandables. I will not allow them on our elk hunts and tell the clients before they come to not show up shooting expandables.

Yeah, not to start anything but I've never seen an expandable yet that wasn't a flimsy piece of schit.

NOTE: I do not like nor shoot expandable broad heads.

However as a guide I would rather my clients shoot what they are set-up for and have confidence in. Provided they are legal to use.

I make all my clients shoot at the lodge before the hunt ever even starts. This shows me who's hands I have to hold, how far a shot I will let them take, who I can let call their own shots, ect. After all a bad shot is just that a bad shot.

My broad head of choice is hands down the RazorTrick.

I dont make them change when they get to camp. I tell them no expandable when then they are booking then hunt. They have plenty of time to change, if they are shooting expandables.

That isn't my point. The point is that if expandable broad heads gives the hunter confidence in their equipment. If they know how to shoot their gear expandable broad heads isn't that big of a deal.

I have not shot any elk but if it were me I would stick with a good cut on contact head. I was just watching one of the TV hunting shows and the guy was using a Rage mechanical and when he drew back one of hue blades came open so he had to let down and put the arrow back in the quiver and grab another. He was in a tree stand for whitetail and he got the shot and the Rage put a big ol' hope in him but what happens when you are on the ground and 5 or 10 yards from an Elk when that happens?

A slick trick magnum here too, very impressed with them on elk.

Steve Chappell seems like a great guy and they kill some toads. check out his youtube channel and watch some of the hunts for some tips.
Almost forgot, Dennis is a hell of a elk hunter. I bet he might be for hire if he is still guiding.

As far as bradheads go, I like 90 grain 4-blade muzzy. you seen what that little head did to that muley at 32 yards. I was always told to go with 100 grainers by Duwane Adams and to stay away from mechanicals. However that was before the Rage and Swacker(sp) varieties came out and I have heard positive results. But im old school and would stick with a fixed blade for elk. FYI if it matters or not, the year Dave Holt was in Duwane's elk camp, he was shooting a 100 grain head.
Being in AZ you know the shots can be longer than average.

Congrats on a long awaited tag!!!!! Round here we've plenty of elk and for since the Shuttle T's came out they have been the rage.

Also JJhack is a true slick trick fan.

Doubt either is a bad choice. The 90gr 4 blade muzzys would perk my interests.
