Had an opportunity to handle a Shimano Saros 1000 spinning reel recently. I've been giving some thought to what would be the best UL rod to match to this reel. I am leaning towards a one piece but the packability of a two piece is tough to argue. Started to look at rods and there are quite a few different options. Is anybody fishing one of these?

So far the G Loomis TSR 792S looks pretty good. If I go that route it would be the most money by far I have ever spent on a rod but good gear sure adds to the experience.

What are you after?

The impetus necessary to set the hook or control the fish should set the parameters.

For trout or crappie, slower/lighter can work, smallmouth a faster tip is necessary, if they have any size, or you're fishing weedbeds.

My main interest is fishing for trout and smallmouth with spinners. That said panfish and catfish are often on the menu so I need some versatility. Water type varies. I think I'm headed down the route of upgrading my equipment.

I'd look hard at this for the money...has a great action, very good quality and does not break the bank. Shimano Clarus also very good as well.

TFO makes some great rods.

IMO, if you're trying to pull this off with one rod, you need to be overgunned on trout, which can affect the feel on smaller trout, in order to be able to set the hook on a sizable smallie.

Worst thing in the world is get that big smallie bite, and not bein able to get the hook in, ask me how I know.

The smallie will always stay on for a bit, jump to show you how big it is, then spit that hook, if you can't hit it hard enough.

Of the 2 BR65 listed, I'd go with the medium / fast action.

You'll still get your rear kicked by a big cat, tho.

I am going to expand my approach to this with 2-3 different rods & reels set up to target different fish.

Over the last several years I have really enjoyed fishing with a Penn 716 Z that I piked up in new condition and mated it to a St Croix 6' one piece Premier fast action UL rod that I had bought and put away. This being better equipment than I had used in the past showed me once again that good equipment always adds to the fun.

The Shimano reels caught my eye first looking at the Stradic and then the Saros. So then the right rod question was next.

All in a days fun.

Where are you fishing in ky? Streams? Creeks?

Get a g loomis glx 721, ditch the shimano and get a pflueger patriarch

Kentucky fishing is mostly ponds and lakes, starting to try out the Cumberland River and have Dale Hollow on my short list. Been fishing more recently in Tennessee in the tributaries to the Land between the Lakes.

I have a Shimano Saros 1000 on a Lamiglas Certified Pro Drop Shot rod which is a 7 foot light-medium spinning rod rated at 4-10#. The reel would work great on a TSR 792S-1, which I think is similar in action to the Lamiglas Drop Shot rod, just a little better finish and would do what you're talking about. I use a Sahara 500 on a GL2 861S TJR for throwing small spinners for trout and panfish but would want more azz for smallies.

Fenwick makes a 5'3" light power moderate fast action that feel perfect but its a 1 pc rod. its my next purchase for shooting docks for crappie and canoe bluegill fishing back in the flooded woods. A lot of UL rods are to limp and don't cast well. The diawa ultra lights are very reasonable and high quality and have some UL actions that aren't whippy and noodley. I think they were marketed under the spinnamatic name or something like that. Hell they probably don't make'em any more cause they were really well built and great ations.

St croix has a panfish line of rods now that have rave reviews. They say the guides are great, made for light line.

The wife and I just bought St Croix 6' light action rods for our crappie/panfish set ups. We have been using strictly ultralights, but the St. Croix ultralights were whippy and to soft. I'm really liking the light action and have no trouble at all throwing 1/32 oz jigs on 4lb. I get better feel on the strike, and a better hook set with the firmer rod. I think it would be a winner on a smallmouth stream.

My 5/0 and 5'6" Clarus rods are UL and medium fast, MUCH Stiffer, and sets hook better, as well as notices strikes, one of the few ULs I really love. With 20 and 25 Pflueger

MY next will be a 6' TFO light paired with a Pflueger 25 size.

The 6# P-line is really proving very strong, rarely breaking when pulling jigs hung up, more like 8-10 mono in break point it seems. The 25 size has 15# braid, but overkill, will put 10# on it down the road.
