I'm all for a flat tax. The government should operate within a known percentage off of the taxpayers. We need more transparency of the overall picture and the taxpayers should know their burden and not the hope and wait till April 15 to see if we guessed right. No one should get back more than they pay in and everyone should share in the burden in what it costs to run the country. If you are invested in anything you are more likely to be successful. If not it shows effort.
Yes it irks me to pay the percentage I do and the system where it puts us against each other so politician can pass it out to show how good of a job they are doing so they can stay in office as if it is a tenured position.

rbinhood, In times of old a robber would have been put in prison or hanged depending on the time.

And how many dollars did you pay in to help support our government?

You dollar Amount or percentage would be nice to know? It would give others a perception on your posting.

I paid in over $60,000 to just the Fed. I don't like paying taxes anymore than the next person, but I also realize the government has to tax in order to generate revenue to run. The governments right to tax was part of the Constitution. You want a sound defense, you want National Parks, you want Social Security, you want highways to drive on, you gotta pay for those things.
Now, since I shared what I paid in, how about you do the same?

I've got you beat. I still hate the Progressive Tax and long for a flat rate.

It feels like it.

for fed taxes, I paid about 60% of what you paid.

so we are in the top 10% ...

What i have issues with is many of the Pork programs that are put in by both parties.

Not to mention the close to $400 billion yearly to pay for the border jumpers and their dependents.

Send the border jumpers home and then let wages settle where business have to compete for the work pool and wages.

I think our current administration is trying to copy the European tax system.

Like 40% taxes for the low earners.
50% for the middle earners.
and 60% for the high earners.

some countries also have a wealth tax of like 10 of your total wealth yearly. This like adding up everything you own and have in stock - bonds - savings accounts and real-estate and then writing a check for 10% to the government.

I could agree with most of your post except social security. Many have paid in more than they will ever recover. The account was flush with $$ and our republican and democrats decided to take that fund and put it in the general pool and spend it, that is why it is in trouble. Plus adding medicare expense to the fund cost helped erode the stability of SS.
Again our politicians decided to use the SS account to pay individuals who have or never paid in.

My wife and I together had a grand total of 43,000 taken out of our pay for federal tax in 2013 and we still owed the tax man another 6,000 by April 15th when it was all said and done.

I do feel fortunate for everything that we have and the fact that we both remained fully employed through the "recessions". However sometimes it does feel like we are the only ones around that are pulling our own weight. There are so many people living in my area that do not have a job and remain on some kind of GOV assistance. I can not go out of the house with out seeing someone use an access card. None of my neighbors are employed, one hasn't worked since 2009. I am one of two people in my 100 home community that cuts their own lawn however I am probably the only person that works 40hrs a week or more. It seems everyone is on disability but they can take their pain killers, sleep all day, drink all night, never work, and still afford their home with a nice car and two vacations a year.

Ever quarter I pay for a very nice safari, in addition to a generous withholding every month.

Oh well...

At least I can read about those trips here on the Fire.

No. I don't want Social Security. It's welfare. The federal government now spends more than half of all the excessive revenue it now extracts from the shrinking number of actual taxpayers on ... writing checks to other people. It's true. More than half of our federal budget goes to writing checks to people. Where was that ever defined as the purpose of the federal government? And when we have to cut spending because we're in insane debt, the federal government does not reduce its excessive habit of getting cheap votes by writing checks to people. Instead, it reduces the defense budget. Before WWII, we spent 0% of our budget writing checks to people. Now, it's over 50%. It's stupid socialism that weakens our nation by robbing the treasury and encouraging people to do nothing so that they can get checks written by more-than half of our federal budget, which reduces the amount of checks we can write, which we shouldn't be doing in the first place. It's stupid.

Oh, and I've paid in much more than you.
