Anyone here know if it's fairly straight forward and possible to re drill an AR barrel from a pistol gas port to a carbine gas port on a 16" barrel?
Obviously the pistol port would have to be blocked somehow.
I presume gas ports are drilled after rifling anyways, so it shouldn't mess up the rifling if done by a competent 'smith, right?

Yes, you can weld over the old port and drill a new one. With a 16" barrel I would recommend drilling a mid length gas port though.

Yes mid length gas would be the way to go. But I would not weld my barrel. Tap some threads about halfway and find a small short screw to loc-tight in place.

The trick will be having a flat, somewhat trued, surface to mount the new gas block on. The gas port landings are standardized (for the most part) in size and the areas in between are not. If it's a not contoured or non tapered bull barrel, you "might" be OK. This might be a cheaper solution...if the new hole can't be sealed to the gas block, you have a new metal baton, or Tact-tic-Cool single shot. Agree. But you could also make or have made a block to fit the new spot on the barrel. Most likely easier to get new barrel.

Good point on the contour. It's the simple things you sometimes don't consider.
I always go mid length on a 16" but this is a wildcat round, a .338 Spectre.
After speaking with the guy at SBR, who kind of took over for TeppoJutsu on the Spectre, he has told me that I should really try the pistol length first, so I'll give it a shot before considering moving the gas port.
