I am thinking about shooting some black powder matches. I also would like to take a bison with a black powder cartridge rifle. Anyone have some suggestions for someone just getting into the game?

Do you have a rifle and reloading equipment?

If you do not, how much is your budget to spend on "needed" items?

I suggest you look at the BPCR web site and make sure you are somewhere near a range that has matches. The nearest one to me is a 4-hour drive, which cooled my enthusiasm a great deal.

It's relative and depends on your priorities. The nearest matches of any significance are an eight hour drive for me, which means an overnighter. I'd happily drive four hours to a decent match.

There is a monthly sillouette match at Watkins, and a monthly creedmoor match at Byers. So when you're in northern Colorado you're in pretty good shape for matches to attend.
There is also monthly matches at Alliance Ne.
There's a Shiloh 40-90 bn on gunbroker, brand new never fired Longmont.. price is quite good considering it comes with 80 brass.

Besides going to matches, you might want to start thinking about what rifle fits your fancy.

I've gone through this myself in the past couple of years. I've been a single shot collector for a long time. After getting interested in BPCR, I looked at & shot several different traditional single shots, and eventually put a .45-90 Shiloh on order - but also found an original High wall Winchester, also in .45-90.

It might be a good question for those who actually have killed buffalo - what is the minimum suggested BPCR caliber, assuming good bullets and shot placement.

No not really because there's always someone on testosterone overload that gets pretty pizzy when some one mentions how affective a 22 magnum at the base of the ear is on the big shaggies.
