Cabelas has Garmin 550T GPS marked down from $599 to $229. Are they any good? Anyone have one? Is it a good buy or should I look at something else?

That's a very good buy on a good unit if you don't mind the touch screen..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Great price- I picked one up last year for about the same to upgrade from a 450T that replaced a Legend. I like the larger screen compared to my old eTrex, the main reason I upgraded. Don't expect the touch screen to work as well as an Iphone, it's a little less sophisticated. You'll receive a discount coupon with it to buy any mounts or maps from Garmin, kind of nice. Definitely a great deal at that price. I haven't run mine enough to see how the batteries hold up compared to the Legend, it does seem to use up batteries when it's off. I didn't have any problems keeping a signal in the trees. I haven't used the camera yet but like the idea of being able to take a picture of a spot and returning to it. It has much much more info in it compared to my legend. We'll see if pictures work better than naming waypoints for my old brain!

Screen could be brighter, can be difficult to see in some light. Camera is OK, just don't expect it to produce portrait quality images. Battery life is ordinary, buy some quality rechargeables and a decent recharger at the same time. Easy to use, picks up signals quickly, had no issues losing signal under trees in valleys etc.

I've got an old 2-color Garmin, circa 1999 or 2000. It get's me back to the truck. I keep waiting for prices n a new color-high-res model top drop into the "can't afford not to" range. Not there yet.

I like mine but its almost like comparing apples to oranges as it pertains to features. I just like the brightness of the display and I prefer an external antenna. The Oregon is a great GPS and its EASY to use. You are saving more by going with the Oregon and its easy like a smartphone. I would do a google search and you'll find a ton of comparisons
