I need for a good ultralight spinning reel for freshwater fishing for bream and Redbreast . I'm looking to spend no more than $100.00. Any of you guys got any recommendations?

I have been using shimmano spriex 500's for over 20 years. changed a few bail springs through the years. One is rigged for live bait and the other for artificial.

Im a big fan of the Shimano Spirex and Sedona in size 500 as well. They seem to be on and off the market so I went to Sedona 750s a couple years ago. Excellent reels for the money ( about $60 IIRC..)

Hope you look at Pflueger, about all I run....President size 20 and 25 for what you are doing, spool up with 6lb P-Line CX or a good 10# braid

One more for Shimanos. In my younger days I was an extreme pike fisherman. Used Mitchell and Shakespeare only to lose fish to drag issues. Only used bait cast for several years till a friend showed me how smoooooth a Shimano drag was. He set it really light and let the weight of the reel lower itself to the ground. Absolutely steady - just like a spider! Haven't had one that has disappointed me since.

If you like "vintage" reels you might want to consider something made by Abu Garcia (Cardinal), DAM Quick, or Langley. I have had luck and a lot of enjoyment over the years first being introduced to them as a kid by my dad and then using them as my "mainstays" for many years. You have to take care of them as parts can be a challenge to find. E-bay has been good to me in that regard.

If you don't want the bother, it is hard to argue with the Shimano Spirex route!!!

The above are kind of like my Pre-64 Model 70's of the fishing reel world!!!

The shimano 1000s are built on a 750 frame now so they are light as the 500/750 but cast much better. The 500s have to many coils unless you are using 2 #test. For 4 and 6 pound test the 1000s are awesome.

The race to see how many bearings can be jammed into a spinning reel is outrageous

I have several new ultra light reels and have seen and used some ( Stella) that are off the charts expensive.

I still think that my little Mitchell 308 reels with 6 lb line are equal to any in actual fish catching performance. They have some handle squeaks now and then, and they do not have the ball bearing smooth retrieve.

But they are 30 plus years old and work as good now as they did when I took them out if the box. 25 bucks should get you one in excellent condition. It's built as solid as any reel ever made

+1 on Shimanos but if you want one that will save some money try the Shimano Sienna 1000, $29.99. I bought one as a backup and for grand kids. So far, three years, the Sienna has worked as well as my Symetre 1000. The Symetre looks better but $70.00 is a big difference. I use 4 lb test on both.

The old Mitchell spinning reels were excellent. I too have one thats about 30 years old & still performs well. I primarily fish for LM Bass & cats & just purchased 2 BassPro UL spinning reels on sale for under $30.00 each. On Ugly Sticks these are all the wife & I need for crappie & White Perch.

Shimano reels are excellent, as are Mitchell and Pflueger. But while you're in the store, give a feel to a Lews and an Okuma. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I'm totally reiterating what's been said here, but here goes. Old school-buy a Garcia Mitchell 308, a couple extra bail springs and never look back. You won't regret it, and you won't break it.

New school Schimano makes a darned good reel, and they just never die. I've retired my Mitchells and run all Schimano stuff now.

IF they still make it, the Mitchell 408 is an even better choice.

Check out the fairly new Pflueger Arbor open face reels.

The unique large diameter yet narrow spool will give you longer casts. I have six of the model 7435s and use primarily 4 and 6 lb fireline for bass fishing in Az.

Thanks to all who gave advice. I pulled the trigger on the Sedona 500, it's a smooth little ride. Caught this below yesterday in friends pond on a beetle spin.
This sum bitch gave a fight and then some..... I had to go in the pond to get him out the grass.
