serial # 12514xx, .300 Savage. Checking for a friend's son. I know it's a later model. My book says $350. Is that about right?

You sure on the serial number being above 1 million? Any chance of a picture?

Well.. either that or it's a 1920's 99A in 300. But then it wouldn't have the leading "1".

I think 1,25x,xxx is too high for any 99 serial. Check the number and advise.

Just off-hand, I'm guessing your son's friend's rifle is a 1968 model and it does have a Lever Boss Code ("LBC") which is "V". The "LBC" is a more sure indication than the serial number of the date of the rifle's manufacture.

Fron now on in this post, I'll call it "your rifle".

The LBC is on the lower, front side of the receiver inside a very lightly embossed OVAL (not a circle) opposite the extension on the lower receiver where the lever fits and rotates.

I say this because the highest number I have in a 1968 Model 99 is 1184xxx, a 7-digit serial number without a letter in front of the serial number.

The following year (1969), Savage went back to a 6-digit serial number and added the letter "A" at the front of the serial number. Their "Letter Series" Model 99s went from "A" through "F".

Savage stopped using the LBCs after 1971 in which the letter "Y" was used.

Value is greatly dependent on condition. In addition, that rifle is what we call a "post mil" (post million serial number) rifles and was made after Savage moved it's manufacturing facilities from Chicopee Falls, Mass to Westfield, Mass..

Post-mil Model 99s are not considered as high a quality rifle by many Savage enthusiasts here on this Forum since it is generally felt those Model 99s (called "Pre-mils") made prior to the move from Chicopee Falls with a serial number LESS THAN 1 million had more hand-fitting and quality-building by craftsmen who may not have relocated to Westfield than those Model 99s made after the move. And, of course, your rifle is a "post-mil" Model 99.

However, that said... your rifle is still a very fine hunting rifle (but not of much interest to a Savage Collector) and, thus, it's value is greatly dependent on it's condition.

In excellent condition (95% or better) I'd guess your rifle might be worth $500 or $550. In very good condition (90%-95%), I'd guess it might be worth $400-$450. In average condition with nicks and scratches, but with an excellent or very good bore, $350-$400.

These amounts are, of course, merely "guesses", but I hope this explanation has helped you.

As Calhoun wrote in h is post and Sav99 mentioned in his post, pictures and a better description of the rifle's condition would be very helpful in determining the rifle's value.

Ron, we've never seen a Savage with a serial number as high as 1,2xx,xxx.

I think the serial number is a typo. So the year is unknown.

Like you and Rick99, I've never seen a serial number that high, either.

Naturally, if the serial number is incorrect, then the year is invalid as well.

And if it is a 99A Saddle gun, it's at least uncommon in .300, right?

He transposed the numbers between this and another rifle. Correct # is 7729xx.









Has the brass counter. Possibly early 50's?

Model 99F, serial number puts it as 1955. Good looking hunting rifle, the sling studs are added aftermarket but factory d&t and otherwise looks great for deer season.
