No there is nothing in this world cuter than Spaniel pups! This is the one thing I am sure of in this world. And if you look up the definition of happy in the dictionary you will see a picture of a Spaniel running in a field.
The day I picked her up. The runt with a nose that was only better than average, but she had smarts. One person Dog and she knew me better than I knew myself.
She was a winner and her last Grouse was pure classic.
My best looked much like the one bottom left corner. Wiry bull Springer that had it all. Out of a Larry McQueen litter. Wild as good be, and then he put the trilogy of Dog, Bird and gun together. After that you just let him run the show.
They are all special in their own way. My First "Molly" was a fluke The breeders did not know anything about Springers, they just wanted a litter of pups and she was the last one left. They bred their bitch to the first male they found. What a a happy coincidence, The bitch was full English going back to the greats like Smut, Glean, Muffin and Flint. The sire turned out to be from Less Zimmerman's old line Breezy Point. She was totally forgiving teaching me what Spaniels were all about as we went. I remember her first trial in Edmonton, Jack Porter was the judge, I cast her off and she made a huge loop into the wind, dove into the brush be hind me and hit the pheasant pen full out. Jack laughed and said "well you cant fault her bird finding ability, walk her down course a bit and cast her off again". I eventually went on to title her she was a great little dog who ran big and looked big running.
We just picked up our springer pup about two weeks ago, so far VERY smart, does anyone know of any good training books specific to springers? Any training tips would be appreciated! Thanks!
Gundog Training Spaniels by Ken Roebuck available thru Gundog Magazine Is the best there is for a vovice. In my 30 yrs of Spaniel breeding/training I have seen more new spaniel owners train their dogs up to very serviceable gundogs with the help of this video.
