Ruger should never have "improved" any of that...

Agreed! I'm not much into wood stocks, but this rifle is gonna stay the way it is. Shoots 200gr Hornady factory ammo very well. Im waiting on Winchester to make a run of brass and then going to load up some 250's.

My buddy's son has been using a Ruger FB .284 since he was 12. Took a few elk, deer, and pronghorn with it. It surely is a nice rifle launching 130 grain Speer HC bullets at 3000+ fps has made it quite the killer for that young man.

The owner of the horse ranch I use to board horses with had a .284 flat bolt. A gun was a gun to him and I don't know how he ended up with something so unique? Anyway, he didn't need money and I couldn't pry it away from him even though he kept it out in the shop leaning against a corner!

The pictured rifle has been sitting in the back of a safe for over 30 years!
When my friend showed it to me and asked me if I wanted it, it took all of about 1 second to say yes! I asked why he wanted to get rid of it. His reply,"I don't like Rugers".

.308 straight in the FL sizer is the go use plenty of lube in the neck, then you can use quality Lapua brass. I then fire form and neck size but the loads I fire form have except able hunting accuracy

Back in '06 or '07, when I was wintering in Jefferson, Tx, I was up to Gander Mtn in Texarkana and they had several older Ruger rifles. They had a M-77 in .358 Win, .284 Win, and a couple of others.

I always lusted after both of the above. But they wanted something like $900-$1000, and I thought that was hi-way robbery. but not long after I returned to MI, I made a trade for a flat bolt in .358 Win. Had I known that they were twisted 1~16", I'd never have lusted after it. Mine sprays a pattern with 250 gr. bullets. But will print 200 gr. just over an inch. (Which should be adequate for deer...) And I have other .358s that are twisted 1~12" anyway.

Congratulations on acquiring a nice rifle that Ruger should have made more of...

Awhile back I handled a Ruger 77 flat bolt in 358, but on closer
examination the bolt numbers didnt match the serial number on the reciever.

My rifle was bought new by the previous owner. He said that it shot "sub-par", and had it rebarreled and free floated. I told him that the free float alone probably would have helped. I asked if he had the original barrel, and he said that he gave it away years ago.

This one is twisted 1-12, but shoots factory 200 gr nicely. 250's are on the way, and brass is coming soon.

That is a nice flat bolt, longshot. I have, er, had one in 22-250 varmint barrel. Gave it away but it is still in the family. My son pulls the trigger on it now.

What are parents for?
