Looking for a rear sight for a pre 64 Model 70, 264 Win Mag. Anyone got one laying around or know when I can get one.

Gemby58: I think I have a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 "Featherweight" in 264 Winchester Magnum - let me check on that.
Yep, I have two of them, in fact.

Varmint Guy, I bet you dont shoot the fwt. in 264 win mag often, I shot one in the mid 80's and told the guy it kicked to much and made too much noise, I did not want everyone in the county to know when I nailed a deer, my deer hammer in the 80's and 90's was a 308 or 30-06. 90% of my life time deer hunting has been about 200 yards or less, once I started shooting longer ranges and shooting, collecting pre 64's I was able to buy a mint std. 264 win mag, I killed my first deer this season with the gun, Im very pickey with the gun,it has to be a bluebird day to hunt it. when I work with it at the farm range I walk each shot to let the barrel cool. very best WinPoor

Pretty sure the Fwt uses a Lyman 16A.

We're talking about a rifle made in '60. The fwt used the 16A as pocono said. The std wt (as op suggest's his rifle is) of that year used the 16B. As per Rule, "Style #1. The standard rifle" On page 165 of "the Rifleman's Rifle" book, Rule states the "Lyman no 16B folding rear leaf sight (1954-1963). This replaced the marble NO 69 with montecarlo comb. Its .350" high, flat top leaf was drift adjustable for windage and had 2 adjustment screws for elevation."

Furthermore, the OP should be able to find one (in excellent condition) on ebay, brownells or Numrich for no more than $35.00. Often times even less than $25.00.

...not to get into a pzzn contest, but the .264fwt came along in 1962 and only came with the monte carlo stock (with recoil pad) and had the 16B rear sight.

If we were going to get into a pizzing match, you'd surely loose my friend. First off, the fwt had the Lyman 16A rear sight to make up for not having the barrel boss. The sight blade was taller (on the Lyman 16A) to make up for the height difference. Secondly it is a well known fact that Winchester held on to receivers specifically for the "short magnums". They stamped a whole chit load of them ".458" (bottom of the recoil lug) to designate them for short mag rifle use. Because of this, you'll see "out of sequence serial #" short magnum rifles out there. I urge you to buy a Roger Rule, "The rifle man's Rifle" book if you do not already have one. It will explain this in more detail. Futhermore, the OP said his rifle is the std wt, which came out in 1960 according to Rule (once more), page 97 of The Rifleman's Rifle" book: "About the same time the .338's were being built, in May, 1959, the second .458 based cartridge was authorized, with a 6.5mm bullet in 100 and 140 grain weights, it was designated the .264 Win magnum. First shipped in April, 1960". That pretty much rained all over your pizzin match buddy wink

Once again, the OP stated his rifle is a std wt, which came with the Lyman 16B rear sight as I mentioned before.

I have and do own several Winchester books, another favorite is my Howse book on model 52's ,a big old book by Midas on Winchesters in general and of course mr Roger Rules book on model 70's, I can assure all the none come close to the depth and accuracy of Mr Rules book ( I call it the mod 70 bible). This guy did his homework before writing his book, he is also a very advanced collector and an overall 'Good guy)! You can take 99.9% of his writing 'to the bank'..... very best WinPoor

When you get in a pissing match here on pre 64 mod 70's you end up with piss on your feet as there an easy half dozen guys here that have forgotten more than most of us know, you usually hear very little out of them, Mr Varmint guy, Mr Whitebird, BSA and several others to name a few, most have a safe full of fantastic examples and must have started putting back the 'good ones' when I was collecting Case pocket knives! very best my friends. winPoor

OK...one more time:

The original question was asked, and answered. We can all agree the rear sight on the .264 STANDARD rifle is the 16B

Now to clarify my statement regarding rear sight for the .264 FEATHERWEIGHT:

G7065 Fwt.Westerner .264 Win Magnum 22" barrel Rear Sight Lyman 16B monte carlo stock.

Final 1963 standard production offerings and changes.
