I've long considered barreling one of my #1/#3's.

Can you chamber a 7x57 so as to use the 7x57 and the 7x57R?

I do understand they are different chamberings/cartridges, but are they close enough so as to chamber the 7x57R on the shoulder and be able to use 7x57?

I know probably a dumb question, but.....

I have never done it but there was a fellow at the range who claimed it was done to his gun. I saw him shooting the rimmed version but he said he could also shoot the rimless version. it was in a number one.

How can a rimmed cartridge fit a chamber for unrimmed brass?

From a safety/"doability" standpoint, it would be no problem (note that I did not consult any references in coming to this conclusion).
The biggest problem would probably be needing an extractor that would work with both the rimmed and rimless versions.

Final thought: why not just go with a 7-30 Waters and leave it at that?

(Or something really exotic, like a 7x65R)

I am far from an expert, but I can relate what I have done...

I have a Ruger #3 that was originally a .22 Hornet. I had it rebored to .356 Win. One day, realizing that the case dimensions are identical to the .358 Win, (Other than the case rim...) I wondered if it would work. I realized that the Ruger rifle has a spring-loaded extractor. So I asked my gumsmith about it. He said to try it. The worst that could happen is that the extractor wouldn't catch the rim.

So I tried it and it worked just fine. Now I can't suggest that more extreme rim differences would work, but in my case it did... Hope this helps..

I am far from expert, but I was thinking the extractors were the same.

I was most concerned about headspace and the dimensional differences between the cartridges. I've read there are differences in the cartridges and cannot or shouldn't be crossed. Don't know if it is a pressure thing or what.

But was wondering if it could be chambered so as to work.

As you say GH idle minds. Seems like you checked on this at one time.

I hadn't really considered it, but the 7x65 would be interesting. I was thinking about ammo availability, if I couldn't find rimmed cartridges in a pinch to be able to use plain vanilla 7x57s which seem to be have better availability.

A few years ago I stumbled across a custom Ruger #1 in 222 Rimmed, an Australia wildcat cartridge. One of the guys here said it was possible to fire 222 Remington in it with a simple extractor change. I thought about it but never purchased the rifle.

I have bought 3 used Ruger #1s with the thought of rebarreling.

All three, when the Copper was cleaned out of the bore, shot too well to rebarrel.

The truth is, Ruger puts good barrels on #1s.

Jericho - I believe you to be correct, changing the extractor on a #1/#3 not to be a big deal. I am thinking Ruger makes a large and a small extractor. I would have to verify.


ClarkM - I don't disagree that Ruger makes pretty good barrels, although sometimes I don't agree with their throating.

I've got a #3 in 375 win that I'm wanting to do something with, as I'm not particularly fond of that cartridge. I also have a #1B in 25-06 that I don't use because of the length and weight. That 25-06 has the best trigger of any of my Rugers, so it is tempting.

Anyway this is a want to, not a need to. Although they sometime seem to become one and the same.

I have a custom # 1 in a 6x57R .i shoot Norma AND RWS RIMMED BRASS .NECKED DOWN TO 6mm . I also shoot 6mm Remington brass . It function perfectly. My buddy is a gunsmith , Roy BEDEAUX , (505) 344-6277. Don't let anyone tell you it doesn't work. Gun shoots in the .3's with all brass
