I have no idea why I bought it, but I found a near-mint one yesterday and took the plunge. I guess I'll rebarrel eventually, as I have no interest in the BOSS. Anyone have any experience real world '06 velocities with the BOSS?
I'm told these were some of the better Classic actions (five digit G series)...any truth to that?

IMHO the BOSS system is the single greatest invention to improve rifle accuracy in the past 20 years. The thing that killed the BOSS was marketing it as a recoil reducing AND accuracy improvement device. As a brake, like all brakes it is an ear shredding abortion. With the solid end on it, it tunes the barrel and I have yet to meet any quality ammo that you cannot tune into sub MOA. With todays modern powders and super monometal bullets the effective barrel length of 20" is no handicap. My 270 M 70 BOSS will push a 110 gr TTSX at 3500 fps and drop 5 well under a MOA out to 300 (farthest tested). If you decide to take that barrel off (undamaged) please drop me a PM, as I'll buy some old push feed 06 M70 and have a tack driver. The proof is in the eating. 323 lasered yards, 1 shot.

I have a Stainless Featherweight .308 with a BOSS on it. I wish it didn't have the BOSS on it but I can't say that I"m unhappy with it's performance. It is one of the most accurate rifles I own. FYI I have the solid piece on it and not the one with holes in it, it's a .308 it surley doesn't need a break on it.

Oldman, IMHO, the thing that killed the BOSS on M70's was the fact that most Model 70 owners are quite traditional in their view point, and would tend to look at that dog knot on the end of the barrel as something akin to a sin. As opposed to Browning owners. Also, I have serious doubts about a Classic barrel being much good on some old push feed '06.

I have a Stainless Classic '06 with the BOSS. I can't tell you what the "real world velocities" are, I think that would be dependent on the load. The 2 deer that were taken with it using Federal High Energy loads reacted as expected when hit.....they died quickly. I bought the rifle for my father to use on a mule deer hunt when he was in his mid eighties and he did appreciate the brake. I will echo the other posters and say it is the most consistently accurate rifle I own.

You have folks who have never shot a boss in their life who hates em, you also have folks like me who owned a gun just like Mr. Oldman 42' . I can tell you it was the very most accurate out of the box gun I have ever owned bar none, I have owned and shot many centerfires. I bought 2 boxes of Fed prem 165 gr BT's along with a 3x9 vxll leupold and bases, after bore sighting thru the barrel like an old timer taught me I had 3 touching and the back gone.I wish I could remember how many whitetails that gun took.I bought another just like it in supergrade ,guess what it was not as accurate! I set the Boss on 2 for the 165 gr bullits and never fiddled with it again. very best winPoor

Every BOSS rifle I ever shot shot extremely well!
The BOSS WORKS! Though it is unsightly.

Yup. To say the least. And accurate or not, I won't buy one for that reason alone. Then, I've not had but one Model 70 that wouldn't shoot anyway, without the boss.

Call me crazy, but I don't mind the looks of it. I won't use the braked version... I have the CR. It just has to shoot with reasonable velocity. Then again, I've never met an '06 that wouldn't shoot a 165 with 57.5g H4350.

Had a BAR with the BOSS, I thought all rifles were supposed to be that accurate! Sold it when I quit stand hunting and starting doing more leg work. .5-.75MOA was just too easy to achieve in that rifle.
