Decided to hit the tuna waters again in August, haven't done it in a while. Booked a 2 1/2 day trip with my son and 5 buddies. Should be a good time [Seaforth landing, San Diego] laugh

They are thick and fast this time of year in Australia, plenty of 100kg+ fish being caught

Did one a few years ago and we caught only albacore on that trip which is unusual.

Going out of Santa Barbara end of July. Gonna be a "best bite" trip. Maybe yellow fin, sea bass, or what ever. Definitely going to be some rock/ling in the mix. Can't wait for my trip, hope you, your buds, and doghunter all have a great trip.

That's a long trip. How far south do you go? Guadalupe island, Alijo rocks, San Benitos?

In all honesty, I don't know. It's my first trip down there. I've fishing 10 miles or so off the coast of S Cal, but that's it. A couple buddies planned it and I am just kind of tagging along.

It's only my second time doing this. Usually I got north and catch Salmon and halibut. Didn't work out this year. Scenery is much better in SE Alaska! grin

Made it home this morning- we had a tough time at first due to the storm that was just trying to get out. Never got into the big ones but we caught a lot of yellowtail, quite a few yellowfin and some Dorados. I caught about a 30# Dorado but action was too fast and furious to stop for a photo and 10 minutes later it was in the hold and color was gone!

NICE !!!

I miss fishing out of San Diego and especially the eatin' once you get home. I know you haven't asked but here's my guaranteed good recipe for yellowtail ...

Cut the fillets lengthwise into strips about an 1" to 1 1/2" in diameter and 8" or so long. Soak in teriyaki marinade for an hour or more, sprinkle with black pepper, and wrap the "logs" with thin sliced bacon held in place with toothpicks.

Throw the yellowtail bacon teriyaki logs on the grill and cook until the bacon is browned on all sides.

Everyone that ate yellowtail that I cooked this way loved it.

I took some tuna that was not yet frozen, marinaded it in Italian dressing for an hour and the sprinkled lightly with black pepper and seared it on all three sides for about 3 minutes a side on HOT grill. I then served with rice and a salad. I had ginger and wasabi with mine- just like seared ahi but this was toro.

It was worth the cost which was about $500. We are going to do it again next year and book the charter ourselves and limit it to less people- all of whom we know. There were a couple of hogs on this trip that made the fishing a little rough for a couple of the timid guys.

I often use teriyaki sauce on salmon. But on more lightly flavored fish, even yellowtail, then I lean more toward butter, garlic, salt & pepper, maybe paprika, parsley flakes and crushed red pepper, tiny bit of soy sauce. Sometimes sprinkle with grated Parmesan and finish under the broiler; works well when reheating leftover.

You ought to try fishing down in San Quintin in Baja. It's only 120 miles below the border and has very good fishing most of the time. Really good yellowtail and white sea bass and at times tuna and albacore.

I have wanted to fish out of Loreto MX but it is too easy just to drive to San Diego and get on a boat, no customs, no kidnapping fears and no worries.
