The .308 Pleaty is capable of taking any animal anywhere! Mr. Pleaty was a genius when he designed such a revolutionary cartridge.

I hear it is a real PIA to reload, however-- straight wall that headspaces on the shoulder.

When I was a kid I read Sports Afield and the the gun guy was Pete Brown. He had an article on the 308 as an all around. He was on different hunts including a grizzly with a 7x57, proghorn with a 270 and Javalina in the jungle with a 243. He wished he had a 308 in all cases. I have never owned a 308. I wish I still had the magazine however.

Sounds like a good article to search out.

If I recall correctly, he did shoot a griz with that 7X57, but his companion choked and "saved" Brown by putting another shot into the bear.

I always liked Brown, but he never go the play that O'Conner and Page did.

The last 5 elk I have killed have all been with a .308 Winchester. Each required only one shot.

3 with 165 grain Sierra HPBT Game Kings,
2 with (gasp).... 175 grain Sierra Match Kings.

I cannot count the # of Mule deer that I have shot or been acting as guide/pack mule, and let newbies shoot, using one of my .308s.

It may not be up to the horsepower or premium bullet standards of some, but using a .308 has filled my chest freezer every year with meat. The little .308 pop guns have helped me fill some other folk's freezers who, due to age or financial situations, needed a helping hand.

smile Cheers All

Yeah I know smile

Fact is when you zip one right below their ear hole, it is lights out. That, or you double lung them, they keel over and die just like being shot with a "premium" bullet.
