Hi,
Since I am not a big lever action guy, I was wondering if I could get some input on a used Guide gun I am looking at.
It is a stainless JM marked gun, with the non-ported barrel. It is in almost new condition (98%), and has ghost sights installed, no box. They are asking $675.
Is this in the ballpark?
Thanks

Farming, or anything else for that matter, is easy when your plow's a keyboard and you're a 1000 miles from the field.

Welcome to the 45-70!
I think you got a fair deal at $675, with the ghost ring sights.
I've got a Marlin 1895 GBL (JM), with XS ghost ring sights. They are nice rifles.

thats about going price, maybe a touch high but what the hell, they ain't making them anymore. great guns. mine shoots cloverleafs with either the 300gr HP or 405 lead factory loads. if you scope it, find a nice 1.5-4.5x20 and mount it in talley lightweight lows. awesome combo
My diploma is a DD214

I think I'm going to stick with the open sights for now, as I have plenty of scoped rifles. Those ghost ring sights are one of the reasons I wanted to pick up another lever action. I have 'em on a shotgun and really like how they work.
Ammo Question (probably worth another thread) - What is the consensus on the factory Hornady 325gr ammo? It is a fair bit cheaper than other 45-70 ammo I see.

Some years back, I found Hornady brass mixed in with several bags of Winchester cartridges. The Hornady brass was about 1/10 inch shorter than factory rounds from Win, Rem, or Starline.

I've got a few pieces of newer Hornady brass, and it is still short.

That seems like a fair price. I think I paid $600 for my SS guide gun back in 2002. My favorite hunting rifle.

The hornady brass loaded with the flex tip bullet is short. They had to do that to get the rounds to cycle correctly. The pointed bullet is longer, so to keep the OAL correct, they shortened the brass. Hornady brass loaded with traditional bullets, i.e. flat nose or round nose, will be regular length.
Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.
