I got the Trooper stocks from Herrett with the covered backstrap for my first model Colt Trooper...., and if ordering another set, would go with the Ropers or Trooper with open backstrap. Even with the tracing of my hand, the Troopers make the trigger reach just a tad long for me. But they sure look nice and feel good.

Go over to the Smith and Wesson forum and buy a pair of stocks from john Culina, who posts under the name Kurac. They're great stocks without the ridiculous wait time of Herrett's.

What is the wait time of Herretts?

Herrett Ropers, Jordan Troopers, or some Jerry Miculeks?
Want to try all three but need to pick one.
Preferences? The vast majority of loads that will be shot out of this revolver will be in the 950-1000fps range.

Herrett Ropers for me. I like the coke bottle shape and the open backstrap, and Herrett does excellent work. Pay the upcharge for the finer walnut, it's worth it; otherwise you will get grips with only a little figure.
Flame me but...Rubber Hogues is what I would go with. Nothing handles recoil better for me. If I had a pair of the three mentioned, I would sell them for too many dollars and buy the Hogues for $20 . Ropers and similar grips make me bleed.

I'll happily consider your opinion before I discard it.
God bless, Travis

You're smoking bat schit.

You really need to see what feels best to you. I've had Troopers...on a Trooper actually. I think they're too big, but maybe not for you. I like Ropers, but again, they may not fit you.
While I have nice fancy customs from Keith Brown and kurac (actually just ordered another set from him a couple of weeks ago), these Herrett's from CDNN for $40 or so fit my hand to a tee. I have them on a half dozen of my N-Frames given the value of the originals.
Travis, I agree that the Hogue soft grips are worth a look. When one's hands get wet and cold (that NEVER happens when we are out in the boonies) they don't slip and don't seem to draw the heat from my hand as quickly as my wood stocks do. I have 2 sets of S&W Rosewood combat gripe for my 2 N frames. Gorgeous and they fit nicely but lose out in the wet, cold times that seem to get the most use of my sixguns.

Those look pretty nice.

But it's a 29-2. I can't put rubber on it. I gots to look good when I miss what I'm shooting at.

Unless you've got huge paws, put on something a little to the slim side with finger grooves, then you'll look good & hit what you're shooting at more often.............thank me later.
If you choose not to follow my most gracious guidance, then GFY.
I had a pair of Miculeks on a M625 for a season or so, and I hated them. This was back in '03 or so. They just didn't fit my hand. I couldn't maintain a consistent grip on it, and the trigger reach was too long.
I like the Roper grip better, and Herrett's does have some nice wood if you request (and pay for) it. I also really like some of the Altamont grips, like the Skeeter Skelton knock-off on the top gun in this photo:

I'm off to get a Smith and Wesson forum account and look for this Kulak guy. I hope that website is a bully free zone.

No use for fingers grooves here either. kurac's link below. I just orderd some "cokes" from him in exhibition French walnut. A long wait due to my wood choice.
You made me stray to another forum while having the link to that [bleep]' guy the whole time? Sometimes I think I'm the only one that isn't selfish around here.
I sent him an e-mail about some stocks he had listed as "for sale." Hopefully they are ready to ship.

Rubbers are an abomination and Hogue's shape is terrible.
Herrett's Ropers are the most comfortable I've ever used. I've got one set from Kurac and while they are beautiful and very well made, they're entirely too thick. Over a quarter inch thicker than my Ropers. I've got two more sets in exhibition grade wood ordered but specified the width to be no more than my Herrett's.

Well 'Cokes', Ropers, Keith Brown or Sandersons fit the bill. Just bring $500 bucks along to get the ball rolling, you may need an extra $200-$300 to seal the deal on a really nice set.
Kurac's (Culina), Herret's (If you like the hand fit), or some from Hogue will work, albeit with diminished panache.

And original Smith "cokes" on this one, a five inch M29-2 tha Alan did. John's work is worthy of either.

Left handed ropers for a K frame. I would venture to guess for bullseye shooting.
They're comfortable, but every pair he made was for an individuals hand tracing. So you can indeed buy grips that don't fit worth a chitt.

If you order from Eagle you should know that "in-stock" means "3-4 weeks" which means you have to call at the two month mark and ask "Where the fugg are my stocks?" and then they ship.
But I will say they were apologetic and very courteous every time I called.

I must have seen that pistol in Cabelas, but mostly he had a steers head on them .. That one may have been some special deal from S & W.. To me Elmer wasn't the kind of guy who would have designed that.. Maybe I am wrong..
Just looked again at the photo of that Smith.. He got stuff from guys who wanted to show the quality of their work.. That is one of the perks of being a gun writer I guess.
Look like Hogues. These are from John Culino, a boot-like grip he used to make, on my 4" P&R'd 629. A bit shorter than typical. They have a nice "coke" shape to them.
On a DA 4" .44 mag with full power loads, rubber is kinda nice, just doesn't always look nice. With reduced loads, wood is just fine.
For a single action, it's always wood. Rubber hurts like hell on a SA.
Wish I'd seen this post back in 1975 before I tore a dime size piece of skin off my right thumb with a pair of sticky rubber grips on a Super Blackhawk. Small Pachmayr Presentation grips on S&W heavy recoil N frames work for me. I use the nice coke bottle grips on my 29-10 with light loads, scurry back to Pachmyers before hunting season. My small grip Ruger 3 screw .41 Magnum 6 1/2" is about as much as I can stand with heavy loads without getting a Bisley model out to play with.
