Let's wake up the thread, Hamburg.

No time for big game this summer, due to a new pup to coach, but bagged a few foxes ... Took pictures of the cleanest kills ... and spend some days fly fishing in German Eiffel. Nice area, nice people and excellent place for wild "fario" trouts.

This one needed a 500 yds approach :p

THAT was a good evening hunt, in an old barn with my daughter and my son, and a good shot on a red fox with the ruger no1.

[Linked Image]

In addition it gave me the opportunity to give the kids a good lesson about firearms safety showing them the 4 inches wide tunnel the 300 winnie digged into the fox, so they actually saw those stuff aren't just toys. They were pretty impressed yet not digusted so it was just fine.

I was talking about the awkward fact that my girlfriend has got her own hunting ground whereas I don't. cry

Her kids and us stayed there in her trailer for almost two weeks. Great times - didn't have much time to hunt though.

Started to say that the Romans would not touch that horse piss, but a google search of the region made the reference clear. I really like that part of Germany, especially near Trier. Beautiful trout pictures.

On thursday my girlfriend and I headed for her hunting grounds where 3 maize fields were announced to be chaffed.
In areas where wild boars occur this is an excellent opportunity to get them, but it is difficulut to acquire a bunch of capable shooters on a thursday.
For the first and smallest field we were four shooters, but only roe deer and a pleasing number of pheasants came out.
Second field was bigger and of complex shape, six shooters around, but again only roe deer and pheasants appeared.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Third field was the biggest and most promising one. Right in the beginning a boar was discovered, but kept hiding in the shrinking maize.
Hours passing by, more shooters arrived, and by the time the last rows of maize were to be chaffed a ring of nine shooters surrounded the boar that was still hiding.
With three lines to go the boar left the maize right in front of my neighbouring shooter only to hide in the bushes around a waterhole, staying there for a couple of minutes and then going back into the maize again.
Although the boar had only been visible for seconds it was clear that it was a big one.
Two lines left the boy finally left the maize again, this time heading for the neighbouring fields - and much closer to me.
I let him pass between the next shooter and myself, and then a shot of my Sauer 101 took him at about 60 meters (65 yards) at full speed. The 180 grs .30-06 federal fusion caused the boar to drop immediately.
Turned out to be by far the heaviest boar ever for me with a weight of 142.1 kg (313.28 lb) confirmed by two different scales. Big smile here :-)

Many hunting buddies use to say that once you're unlucky with love you're going to be lucky in your hunts ...

Don't know but ... opening day drive on saturday ended like that with the 7x64 [Linked Image] ... and beating the high blackberry bush on sunday ended like this, simply with the .12g. [Linked Image] .

As an expat that has been working in Sweden for the past three years. I have been lucky enough to take some very nice trophies in the past few seasons but a nice bull moose has eluded me. I took a week off to try to get it done but no luck so far. Been on five moose this week but only cows, calves and one small bull. Trying to hunt them solo like I grew up doing out west for elk and blacktails in the timber. I found a shed from a thee year old bull that is still on the property but haven't been able to spot him yet. He would be worth looking at this year. I sat on a stand until dark last night. I could hear something large working in the forest but couldn't tell if it was moose or boar. Having three roe deer does within 100 yards for over an hour I had good wind but whatever it was would not break the tree line. In the last couple minutes of shooting light a respectable 6 point roebuck came in to 30 yards. An easy shot and quick drag made it too hard not to pull the trigger so I settled on the buck for the evening. Back out for the bull in the morning. Skitjakt!

Yes it is.
It belongs to my Swedish hunting partner whom has been gracious enough to make it available to me for the duration of my stay. So foreign yet warmly familiar when compared to my rifles back in the states. It is accurate, handles well and is well suited to hunting then entire globe. The workmanship, fit and finish are impeccable. I have been very successful with it so it has a permanent place in my heart.

It depends on the terrain a particular herd inhabits. I have taken them with a handgun at 50 yds and as far as 930 yds with a rifle. I was out this weekend and had them anywhere for 300 yds to 750 yds. Too warm to shoot one as I did not have a cooler with me. Hopefully next weekend.

How's this for Swedish fish?
[Linked Image]

I took this salmon (lax) earlier this year from Lake Vanern in Sweden. The largest lake in the EU.

Gutted out it weighed 5.7kilos = 12.5lbs. I figure live weight was around 15lbs...

It does look good! Usually here in the states a 'European" mount still has the upper jaw/teeth attached.

BW, are those boars any good to eat and do you make roasts or just sausage if you eat them?

Depends on the age of the creature and whether the boar is in the rut (disposed in that case) or not. Old boars usually end up as sausage.

This past weekend we canceled our only driven hunt invitation and used the moon to take our chances on fallow deer and wild boars in my girlfriends hunting area.

2013 was truly an annus horribilis. 2014 seemed to be the year happiness was coming back, but eventually turned out to be a much more horribilis annus than 2013.

I now hope 2015 will bring many better and good things, and I wish every one of you, here, at the campfire, a very happy new year.

Meanwhile, Here are some pictures of the 2014 fall season and around. I was very glad to hunt this season and to spare so many good times with my hunting friends.

First drive and first shot of the season:

Point blank shot in the high dense blackberry bushes, as surrounded by the herd. Missed a very big one so close it was not possible to shoulder the gun.

The old GSP superbly retrieving and bringing back a pheasant after an excellent pointing action

The young griffoon seemed to be a very good hunter. He started to point, retrieve and bring back at 7 monthes and performed many excellent pointing actions.

The day I shot 2 roe deers. The first wild boar was a powerful 280 lbs tusker, pretty dangerous which caused heavy damages to the beating dogs.

Testing a nice 30-06 Sako IV which I used to kill that young roe. THat shot apart, I mostly used my old 7x64 European Browning this season.

Some venaison pasta sauce. I tried it with roe deer, hare and wild boar, wild boar is the best.

Roe deer is the best for steak and lasagnas ...

(Edited 'cause I did forgot one MAJOR ingredient in the translation process)

I try to translate the receipe (typical recipe frome Liege) but I'm not sure you can easily find all the ingredients out there.

Warning: hares aren't rabbits. Hares don't live nor hide or bear their young below ground in a burrow. They're much bigger than rabbits too. I'm not sure about the result with rabbit meat which has a very different taste if I compare our hares (lepus europaeus) to our rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

The original recipe uses beef or mixed veal and pork. I use only venison. It works well with hare (lepus europaeus) and roe deer (capreolus capreolus).

1. Mix the grinded meat with those ingredients (for 800 g meat): 1 egg, 2 very finely sliced shallots and 80g breadcrumbs) and shape the mix into balls.

2. Melt some butter or cooking butter in a pan, then use it to colour the meat balls on every face. Keep the balls apart for further use.

3. "Deglaze" (not sure about the right cooking term in English) the pan with about 6 soup spoons of wine vinegar and 3 soup spoons of sugar. Add 2 sliced big onions and let them melt for about 3-4 minutes.Add the meat balls on the onions bed then add 2 twigs of thyme 1 leaf of laurel and 2 cloves. Add water up to mid height of your ingredients in the pan. Cover the pan and let shudder for about 20 minutes.

4. Take the meat balls off the pan and take the cloves off too. Add 3 soup spoons of white wheat flour, previously thinned into some water. Add a handful of dry grapes and 5 heavy loaded soup spoons of Liege Syrup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirop_de_Li%C3%A8ge). Add salt and pepper to the right taste.

5. Put the balls back into the sauce for at least 10 minutes before you serve.

I like this served with mashed potatoes ans butter cooked sliced carrots.

we have rabbits(cottontails) and hares(jackrabbits and snowshoe hares)....though ive not noticed a huge difference in flavor between the two but the hares ive eaten have mainly been young ones cause the old ones tend to be kinda stringy...flavor aint bad but the texture leaves something to be desired...

the recipe is fine, 'deglaze' is the right term....though we call 'leaf of laurel' bay leaf....the Liege syrup ive never heard of but going by the description im sure i can come up with something close enough to get in the ball park using apple butter and some other stuff rendered down a bit

I don't know GV except for his posts here. But I have gained some knowledge of the Walloon people. I married one. They eat as well as the French, as much as the Germans and drink more beer per capita then any region in the world. Thanks to GV's pictures I now know that they are hunters as well. All the best in the new year; Mike
