Looking to buy a hammerless .410 singleshot. Would prefer a youth model. These used to be everywhere, but I can't seem to find any now that I want one.

what you are looking for is a savage 220 or 219.the 220 is the shotgun, the 219 was a rifle but some had an extra barrel fitted in a shotgun also.

Current Savage 220 IS a bolt gun, a 12 guage "slug gun" based on the 110-type action.

The "previous" (I WON'T say "old") 220 is a hammerless single shot, a very nice little gun and, at least where I come from, very hard to find now. People hang onto 'em. (You can't have mine!).

Mesa, to bad you won't part with that. Those look like that would be a nice little gun. If I come across one, any idea what I should expect to pay?

there is one on GB with 5 barrel set for about $900.00. if I was you I would go that way, it is a 219.the barrels alone is worth that much.

Thanks for the tip Hubert, but that price is out of my league. Just looking for something to take a couple young ones squirrel hunting. They used .22's last year and did ok . Those little tree rats don't stay still very long though.

You might have more luck getting a 410 side by side and just loading one barrel in the beginning.

A really nice (clean bore, stock not cut, most case color present, etc.) 220 or 220A in .410 would probably run you about $400, IF you could find one. A 220L would be considerably less because us tradtionalists don't like the sidelever action nor the birch stock.

But they are all hard to find now, and .410s are in high demand and have been for some time (check the current prices on a .410 Win Model 37, for example!!!! Mine cost $23.50 in 1951).

You might do better, or at least cheaper and faster, to get a NEF Youth .410 and just put up with the hammer. Hammers have some advantages for training kids, and some liabilities, too, especially for really young kids who don't have a lot of strength in their hands.

I did the basic small game hunting training for my younger son on my T-C G2 Contender Carbine with a 23" cylinder bore .410 barrel. Worked fine for cottontail rabbits, which is what we hunted the first season. My G2 has had its trigger pull reduced and hammer is lighter than factory, too. Easy on a kid's thumb! The underlever is easier for most kids to open than any toplever, too. LOTS of leverage.

I had a baikal hammerless .410 not long ago. Remington/baikal may still make them. The are reasonably priced.

And if you can't find a Baikal, you might look for a Beretta folding single or one of the clones of it made in Italy and imported by Sloan's and others. They are light and hammerless. Just a thought--the ones NOT marked Beretta are a lot cheaper and work fine. Might try googling "Folding shotgun".

There is actually an italian non beretta here near me for sale. $200. I have a beretta single. Sharp for a single and is a 20ga. I think mine is from the 50's but looks new. Shoot me an email if you want a link to it.

You might also consider one of the old Mossberg 410 bolt guns.
Dunno about their availabilty or cost, but if you can swallow some pride, they'll shoot as well as any - adj choke too.

Speaking of the hammer 410's, my grandkids couldn't cock the hammer on my M24 Savages or a little Stevens hammergun I found.
Stumbled across a good buy on the little NEF youth and it is MUCH easier for a youngster to cock.

You can buy a new Yildiz for $129. At least you could last year. They weigh 3.3 lbs. really neat little guns.

Thanks to all for the advice. I'm gonna just keep checking the local shops and online classifieds. Maybe stumble on to something in .410 or even 28 gauge. Thanks again
