Ruger decided to make their busch league rifle with threaded barrels so I opted to try one in the name of practicality and science.

First impressions are:

Stock is an UBER piece of schit. The slightest flexing while the bipod is attached results in the plastic touching all sorts of schit I'd prefer it not touch.

Trigger is ok. But not as good as a Timney/Shilen/re-touched Remmy, etc IMO.

It does shoot UBER well with a variety of loads.

1" dots. Loads range from 1,000fps to 3,250fps.

[Linked Image]

These are sub-sonic 50gr V-Maxes and they appear to be wobbly. But still shot good enough.

[Linked Image]

50gr. V-Maxes clockin' 3,200ish.

[Linked Image]

Everything has been shot suppressed. Groups to the 300yd line have been well under MOA with two different loads. Neither of which have been developed for the rifle.

Overall? Not bad.

Missing a "GFY" sticker. Clearly not that UBER?

ETA: Or is the sticker on the other side?

Sumbitch busted a paint can @ 500+ this afternoon. I UBE'd in my shorts.

Listen you fuggin' morons. My beloved mother gave me that picture because it's goddamm UBER.

The pawn shop wouldn't give me what I hoped I could get for the frame, so I opted to hang the portrait in my garage.

It was painted when she was in college and it's fuggin' UBER, and it keeps me safe when I reload or gunsmith when I'm really drunk.

Just scoped the wife's RAR .223 tonight. Was gonna be my truck gun but she quickly laid claim to it. Looking forward to shooting it tomorrow. Would be UBER cool if it shoots the same stuff I run through the AR (25gr Tac behind 68gr Hornady BTHP) acceptably well. Couldn't find any 75gr Amaxes yet so have a bunch of the 75gr BTHPs to try also.

Agree with you on the stock. Hope it shoots well in spite of it. Already emailed B&C encouraging them to pony up

I put together a Hornet level load for my 223 Predator. 9.0gr Unique, 40gr VMax, 2700 fps, 35K psi, 56% load density.

It's solid sub-moa, most of th shots within .5 moa.

That would still be pretty loud though.

These Blue Dot loads are air gun quiet. Great for pitbulls...

When you purchased the 'Merican?

Dammit. All these reports on the 'Merican being a deal... Now Deflave and his momma have blessed one.

I need to be strong and not give in... But I saw one at the LGS in 7-08. If only that stock were not so schitty.

Pickin my .223 version up today. I am thinking it will handle the 75 BTHP's in the magazine, but not the A-Maxes.

the little redfield 2-7x fits pretty nicely on these rifles ...

I have the standard compact. Shoots just fine for a $350 rifle. Stock isn't pretty, but works. I can't see replacing it though. It would be easy to quickly turn a $350 budget rifle into a $600 budget rifle that doesn't shoot a bit better.

I shot the Gay Maxes with Trail Boss and they shot pretty well. But yeah, definitely too long for the mag.

I need one of those mag box extension things.

Yeah, I wouldn't put any more money into one.

I mainly bought this one just to have a bolt gun to try some sub-sonic stuff. The can was previously on my AR.

When I'm done with load work I'll probably sell it and rebarrel a real rifle to suit my needs.

I have 3 of the RAR 223's. They all shoot the 75's extremely well. They all have their own load preference, but keeping 5 under an inch at 200 is common.

They're on the cheap side, but they shoot as well or better than any factory rifle I've ever owned.

There's no mechanical problem with the stock that 5 minutes with a round rasp won't fix.

As for esthetics, any rattle-can artist like Ingwe can work wonders, especially with the application of some Bondo beforehand.

I raspeded it before I shot it but it flexes so bad it still makes contact when using the S-version of the Harris.

I've never glued anything in the bottom to make them more rigid but I may try that with this one.

This was plunking three under an inch at those distances yesterday.

69gr Sierra and CFE 223.

UBER combo.

If only that were the case

+/- 3" groups with everything I ran through it, mostly n the vertical. Firing pin hole definitely needs bushed. Cratered with everything, even mild loads and punched the primers on one of the heavier loads. Magazine box can't bind. Scope base holes cannot press on the barrel. Scope bases were torqued with Borka torque wrench as were rings, ring caps and action screws. The only thing I can figure may be the limber stock and semi-hard rest. Put a knit cap on top of the rest to soften things up but did not help any.

Any other ideas?

The stringing could be from fugged up levels of contact in the barrel channel.

But the piercing and cratering of primers would keep me from messing with it at all.

Send that mofo back to Ruger.

I never fired mine without hogging out the barrel channel. One look at it and I was crackin' beers and filing away.

But like I said, you start messin' with it and you leave the "voided warranty" door open.

Mail that bitch.

What about headspace? Lots of possibilities here.

Just out of curiosity, have you measured the distance to the lands with several bullets? The RAR's have pretty short throats, which can be a good thing.

I could probably make some titanium inletting rods, to stiffen the forend. They'd be Uber priced smirk

But wait - a better idea - I think Gorilla makes Gorilla camo Uber duct tape. That would also stiffen the stock...

Don't have headspace gages but did check brass growth at the shoulder after firing. Almost no growth. Checked distance to lands with 68gr Hornady BTHP and 75gr both. Loaded both just to kiss the lands. Attempted the KFPRO method, but nothing came together. My AR put 10 of the same load in about 1 MOA. For sure though, I get higher velocities from the 18" Ruger than the 18" AR.

Firing pin hole is obviously oversized. Cratering even with loads pushing 68s at < 2700 Tempted to send to Gretan but should probably just send back to Ruger.

Got one the other day for one of our newest Eagle Scouts, as a present for making Eagle and Graduation present...

my first impression of the rifle, particularly the stock... it should be called the Ruger Mexican, instead of the Ruger American...

but so far it has shot fairly well...

Travis;
I hope this finds you and yours well on this wet and stormy night - not to be confused with a dark and stormy night.....

Somehow because of all the Campfire coolaid being spread about the Ruger Americans I've ended up with one.

I should add the standard Canuck pricing and availability complaint here in that I found all of 3 dealers with one chambered in .223 in stock up here - just the plain vanilla RAR too, no shorty, no Predator.

Anyway, I've got a fair bit - 3lb maybe? - of WC845, and a fresh can each of Varget and RL15 along with enough small rifle primers and cleaned up once fired military cases to load something.

I've got a couple hundred 60gr HP that I was going to start with and intend to see if anyone up here has anything heavier, but am not holding my breath.

Anyway Travis, if you or anyone has any suggested loads for the ber RAR with the powders I've got I'd love to hear them.

Thanks in advance and happy ber Thursday to you and yours too.

Dwayne

Dwayne man!

Sorry to hear you're still stuck in Canada. With any luck I'll win the next election and you'll all end up part of the US regardless.

I'm thinking 26.0 grains of Vargay should be a good start (and possibly stop) point for your 60 grainers. Save the RL 15 for something non-peasant.

I'm only going to cruise the low-income areas of wildlife with this rifle. I don't want to kill anything high brow with the clunker.

See you in church,
Travis

Travis;
Thanks for the load suggestions, I'll give it a whirl for sure and see how it does.

I've shot a bit of the WC845 in the .30-30 so I know it burns and all that, so I'll try some of that over the chronograph with the 60 grainers too.

There are somewhere ensconced in my reloading room shelves, a box of 60gr Partusions and some sort of TSX's too - 53's I'd say without looking right now.

They might be tried out too just because.

Mainly I picked this thing up to shoot at far away rocks and to have a cheap to shoot/light recoiling/fun rifle for new shooters to try out.

I've got an ancient 1:14 .22-250AI with a 26" #4 Douglas Premium match barrel that shoots quite well, but a lot of new shooters find it's way to heavy for them and well frankly it is a pretty heavy coyote rifle all things considered.

On the low-income wildlife hunt though you've got me thinking as our family tries to shoot at least one "really local" mulie buck every fall.

Since I had to pay more for the rifle up here across the medicine line, do you think it'd be OK using a clunker in a sort of middle class/blue collar farming/vineyard sort of neighborhood?

Any suggestions on where I might search out the complete rules on the 'net?

Being a Canuck I don't want to offend anyone - naturally - and of course I'm sorry if I have.... wink

As always I'll save you a seat near the back Travis.

Dwayne

I think if Flave Precision provided their services for "chopping" the .223 RAR down to a shawty, you would no longer think it was a clunker, but suddenly a sexy beast. youd need to ship a 12 pack with it though to be drankened prior to the beholder eyeballing it. i promise youll think the shawty is hot after youre drunk.

I do believe you're correct sir, but sadly Flave hasn't been elected President yet and that invisible, yet omnipotent medicine line keeps me from sending either clunkers or beer over to Havre.

The other thing that might prevent it is that our eldest daughter seems to think it might be hers - if I can get it to shoot OK first. Kids, eh? wink

All the best to you for the remainder of the week sir - may it be an ber one indeed.

n8dawg6,

If Flave Precision opens a Canadian branch office, it should be stocked with Kokanee instead of Molson, in keeping with its peasant business model.

Oh yeah. There is always beer laying around the shop.

You'll have to steal it though. I ain't runnin' a soup kitchen.

Travis

PS- If you have a problem with theft, 'Flave Precision may not be a good fit for you.

Technical Question....

If you put an "L" sticker on your Ruger Mexican... would that make the Peasant Rifle, a PLeasant Rifle?

or you could put an "H" decal on the side instead, and it could be Your PHeasant Rifle?

Decisions Decisions...

and in keeping with the theme for Optics.....

a 5 x 20 X 50mm Tasco, from Mid South for $49.95....

or a 6.5 x 20 X 50 mm Tru Glo or Simmons from Natchez for $59.95??? ( with the Illuminated Reticle for Sure )

Best to use whatever glass you have laying around. The cheaper the better.

'Flave Precision does not endorse shooting pheasant with rifles when outside of a rez.

I mounted a $19.95 Tasco 4 Power on top of mine...

Got it on close out at KMart on the way home....

They threw in the Simmons rings for free... that saved me a Fast $4.99!

For some reason, a 3 x 9 Leupold refuse to mount on there...

but the Tasco 4 power went on there like a champ... looks pretty sporty too...

Some 40 grain Varmaggeddons, and I'm ready for Elk Season...

Two more comments:

Kokanee beats the hell out of no beer at all.

Travis, you're supposed to use the rasp on the INSIDE of the stock, though it won't hurt the outside much.

I'd opt for an aluminum bedding block, which you can get for free from all the empty Ensure cans.

Seems to be a lot of want here to stiffen the stock. I'm thinking those little blue pills will work for most of yus. But for the peasant rifle project (PRP) I really do dig the idea of use what's laying around and what's laying around up here in Canaduh is a lot of broken hockey sticks the ditches are littered with them. I'm thinking lag bolt a select chunk of hockey stick handle underneath the forearm. Not some kind of bad bubba show, show a little pride, countersink the bolts nicely inside the forearm lest they rub on the meddle and coz akerasy problems. Then hit the whole shebang with flat mat desert brown tacitcool krylon. Or spend a little more if you have it and get ingwe to do his magic for final finish of the PRP cool

Just reverse the "re" at the end of a Canuk word to "er".... And refer to fluids by the Imperial Gallon. That'll solve many of your translation issues.

N.B. Try to avoid Canadian French Fries.

N.B. #2 When Canuks refer to "Timmy's", it's not about the kid from the Lassie show.

I'm afraid it'll be a bit anti-climactic after your big build-up.

Don't gimme that schit....

I know there's plenty on the floor.

Cripes, have ingwe find them when he wakes up.

I also want an external bedded stock with a still shot/buttstock decal of Paris Hilton on top; you know, when she's flicking her bean.

It'd be the only shock and awe I could create at a PD shoot....

I dreamt of Flave Precision last night.and one client was trying to sell US a rifle. A model 20 from Howa, built in Belgium, in .229 Calibre. Said he had personally chronoed it at 10,000fps.

Reminded me of the stories I used to hear behind the gun counter.

I used Flave's Visa card to buy the gun for 1.2 million. grin

Can you hog out a groove or 2 inside the channel to epoxy in a couple of carbon fiber rods? (chop a CF arrow shaft in haff)

Light weight stiffness.

He's not feeling Uber. He's the anti-uber. The diet coke of Uber.

'Flave Precision may do some high wind testing today. Gonna be UBER-licious.

I can't not be Uber.

I may be Uber lite today, but I'm not non Uber.

To be perfectly honest, I thought the thread title said "Pheasant rifle" and I was like "pfuk yes! I want a pheasant rifle really bad!"

And that's the only reason I Uber clicked this chit.

I suppose.

Well, I'm off to Wikipedia on my rainbow internet surfboard... to learn some polish stuff.

If I'm gonna be polish, I might as well learn something about Poland.

I'm not going to study up on the gayness, I heard what those guys do.

I also know the president really likes the gays.

So, I got that goin for me.

I know how to do that. I watch my daughter.

She throws a stick of butter (from my fridge) into a frypan on the stove (my pan, my stove) and then she empties half a bag of those little tater pillow shapes into the pan and literally boils them in butter.

Then she eats em all and leaves the pan on the stove, fridge door open, butter splattered everywhere and she'll go sit in my spot on the couch and change the tv channel from fox news to the homo remodeling show on HDTV.....

That's how you make pierogies.
