I picked up a nice Winchester model 70 XTR in 7X57 Mauser that I plan on hunting with this year.

I have a Leupold VXII 2-7X33 that I will be mounting on it.
Should I go with Low or Extra Low Talley Lightweights for this?
If I should upgrade to a 2.5-8X36 later will the Extra Lows still work if I go that route?
Thanks!

Call Talley. They'll tell you what will work.

Assuming your gun is drilled straight, be prepared for the easiest sight-in ever.

When I mounted a new VX2 in Talley one-piece mounts on my pre-64 M70, it was so close to right on the money that I could have hunted with it as is.

What fresh Hell is this?

I believe extra lows would work for both. I'd use leupold dual dovetails if it were mine though. It's a pretty rifle and the dual dovetails look a lot nicer. It's not really "featherweight" so the extra couple of ounces wouldn't make a difference. Talleys work fine and I use them on several rifles, they're just ugly.

This. The guys at Talley are great to deal with! Talley is the "easy button"

WFR, The ex-low will work perfectly with both of the scopes you cited. I have a leu. 3-9X40 in ex-lows on a mod. 70 with good clearance on both ends. What you may run into on a L/A is getting the scope rearward enough. Talley makes a 1/4" offset front ring that brings the mount base flush with the ejection port, but not sure if they offer the offset in the ex-lows. I know they do in the lows. +1 on the easy sight-in. I have become used to using VERY little of my windage adj. when sighting in with the Talleys and their cust. service is about as good as it gets.

Nice rifle. I have the extended lows on mine with the 2.5-8x36.

Just mounted a VX2 3-9 Ultralight on mine. Talley ex-lows worked perfect. Ditto on the sight-in. With a brand new scope and those mounts I was on paper a 200 yards without touching the dials.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.
