I just bought a Ruger 10/22 .22WMR today. I bought it purely planning to resell as I got it for the seller's asking price of $550 (13 people called after me in response to the ad) and I can likely sell it for $800. However, I kind of like it.
I've heard that these rifle had extraction problems and that they went from an original design of one extractor to two extractors. I test fired four shots from it an it seems to be fine. It is a single extractor model. I've also heard that the later two extractor models had problems with bolts cracking.
So here is what I'm wondering, are the problems that I've outlined correct? Is it an inherently flawed rifle or can I expect good service from it if, say, the first 100 rounds function fine. The previous owner said it has functioned perfectly since new but he only put 16 rounds through it.

Keep it and hunt with it , it should serve you well.

I sure hope so but I'd still appreciate a few more thoughts and experiences on the topic

If most everyone else had problems, whey would this rifle be different?
No one has ever designed a realiable semi auto 22 Mag
The case is too long for a blowback action to work unless everything is perfect

I almost bought one when they were still in production but I was told not to feed it the high velocity 32 grain CCI Maxi Mag +V ammo, the guns should be fed 40 grain ammo, not heavier, not lighter.
As I understand it, it's basically what Snyper said, everything has to be perfect with a case that long and the speed of the bolt during cycling is affected by bullet weight and velocity changes.
Since I was specifically intending to use the CCI +V load which I had a lot of, I decided to skip the semi-auto and go with a bolt action.

Snyper: As with virtually all overly broad statements/contentions yours (yours: "No one has ever designed a reliable [spelling corrected] semi auto 22 Mag") is wrong also. As evidenced by this one example: the Volquartsen semi-autos in 22 Magnum! I have seen a number of these work "reliably" over the years! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Buddy at work has four 10/22 magnums. No problems with any of them. He uses them for sage rats when others are using 22lr. In other words, high round counts per day.
The only time he had a problem was when he installed an HMR barrel.

The BRNO .22 Mag. that Tom Knapp used in his shooting demonstrations had a reputation for reliability.
He who joyfully marches in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice.

I have a first generation Ruger 22 Magnum. It did not extract consistently until I installed a Volquartsen extractor. It very rarely gives me problems now.
I had no idea they go for $800 now!

The case is too long for a blowback action to work unless everything is perfect actually i have two CZ/BRNOs 611s and an HK 300 that are all 22 wmrs and they are utterly reliable and amazingly accurate. my sons CZ 512 22 wmr has so far been completely reliable and also quite accurate.

Aren't most of those guns everyone listed out of production? If they were so great, why aren't they still made?

I believe the CZ is still made and it is the ONLY 22mag semi auto that Ive ever heard of that was reliable. Why it isn't or wasn't imported into the US, I couldn't tell you.

They are no longer made because they did not sell well. No 22 Magnum has been a huge seller, but I love mine and have plans for more, including Kel-tecs PMR30.
