I thought you guys might like to see the blank from which the stock was crafted. The short blank is a stick of European walnut that Butch Lambert got from me. It is now on his Hyper single shot rifle.

It is a magnificent rifle. Is it an artifact of the photos, or is the left side of the butt less dramatically figured in the stock than in the blank? I have not yet done enough stocks from blanks to be able to accurately predict what the stock will look like, based on the exterior of the blank. Sometimes the surprise is on the up-side, sometimes not.

I wish I could afford even one example of such craftsmanship.

The photos are a bit deceiving. The photo of the blank tends to exaggerate the figure somewhat, partly due to a fresh coat of lacquer thinner for the photograph. The photo of the finished stock does not show the stock quite as figured as it is. Having said that, Gary did leave some of the figure on the left side on the shop floor, but not as dramatic as the photos would lead you to believe.

Gorgeous! Built for shooting prairie dogs I guess because according to some folks, the .270 just bounces off elk and deer...... wink

Stunning....I'm always in awe of the true craftsman in the business of rifle building. Its like a fine piece of art....one would never tire of just looking at it. I bet it shoots as well ......Thanks for sharing. Goodshot

azshooter: I finally got around to weighing the rifle to answer your question. The rifle with scope and mounts, but no ammo and no sling, weighs 8.2 pounds.

for all: I finally got to the range with the rifle yesterday. Attached are two representative groups, one with Winchester Supreme factory ammo with 130 grain bullets fired by my son Jeff. The other was from a box of my favorite .270 handload consisting of 130 grain bullet, 59.5 grains of H4831, once fired Norma brass, and a Federal 210 primer. This came from a box that I loaded probably twenty years ago. I've been a bit lax in my reloading duties lately. Anyway, I fired the group and it is about as good as I am capable of shooting anymore. At my age, those teeny-weeny groups I used to shoot are a thing of the past I'm afraid.

At any rate, it's a shooter as well as a fine looker.

Very nice shooting for a hunting rifle, but you already know that!

What else do you have in the works, or have your eye on? Another Goudy? Somebody else for a change?

22WRF:
I have two more rifles in the works at the moment. One is a pre-64 Model 70 action barreled by Danny Pedersen with one of his cut rifled barrels chambered for the .300 Win Mag. It will be stocked by Gary with a stick of exceptional English walnut I got from Jim Bisio. The second one is a 1909 Argentine action and a Heym 9.3 mm barrel I got from Ralf Martini, which will be chambered for the 9,3x64 Brenneke cartridge. Reto Buehler is doing the metalwork. At the moment I'm not sure Gary will stock it, or, someone else.

Some great names there. Looking forward to seeing all of the photos on here when the guns are finished.
