I acquired one of these a while back. In talking with Turnbull they told me less than 100 #1's were made in the caliber. That info raised a flag with me that maybe this would be the one #1 of the herd to stay unfired, NIB as an investment. Then however, the box turned up missing, which IMO knocks it down slightly as a collectible. So I decided to work up loads & shoot it.

The load data is from Turnbull, and I expect is optimized for the 1886 variants. The loaded round shown with the 425gr CP is seated to the lands in the Ruger. They actually mike about .477" dia.

The Woodleigh softpoints are obviously intended for the .470 Nitro, but Turnbull shows them reaching 1900 fps in their cartridge. It will be interesting to see how they do in the #1, this weekend.

I shot one in an 1886 that Doug had given one of guides in Alaska. Recoil is quite manageable, and LOTS of power :-)

The rifle has plenty of throat. smile The 500gr Woodleigh shown is not close to the lands, and is only seated with about 3/8" of the bullet in the neck.

Recoil I would say is somewhat worse than a hot loaded .45-70 #1S. Maybe not as bad as a .470 Nitro double. The first surprise came in trying to get the rifle sighted in. With the bore lined up on the 100 yard bullseye, and the scope likewise matched, it shot about two feet low at 100 yards. I have sighted in numerous rifles by this manner, and seldom have trouble getting them on paper at 100 yards. Not this one! Were I doing this again, I'd start with a 25 yard target first.

I had loaded 9 of the 425gr CP bullet, over 68 gr of TAC, and used almost all of them getting the scope zero'd. I then switched to the 500 gr Woodleighs, which were loaded as shown over 61 gr of Varget. After fine tuning the zero again, I saw some good looking groups. The final three shots went into about 1" at 100 yards, and the first of that group I called as a flyer. The last two shots were touching. The great beast easily out-shot a 1970's vintage .25-06 #1 smile

I am very pleased with the rifle. The Woodleighs are recommended for impact velocities between 1800 and 2200 fps. I need to add some more Varget to get up there, but I doubt that will be a problem.

today's results:

The rifle is finely accurate. Velocity is a touch slow at 1860 fps, so more work is indicated. But I remain very pleased with the rifle smile

Seems like a lot of powder and lead, even for nilgai, but uber cool nonetheless!

It is indeed a lot of powder & lead for a 9 lb rifle. I'll bring it to Quemado. Haven't decided on the load, yet smile Woodleigh suggests an impact velocity of 1800-2200 fps, so I'd like to see a bit more velocity. But it's not far off my limit for shooting off a bench...

Congratulations!!
Half inch group is a KEEPER!!

How would you rate recoil as compared to the 375 H&H, 458 Win. Mag, etc.?

More than a .375 H&H #1 (I own one). The H&H gives a profound shove. 500's sho'nuff smack you smile It's been many years since I shot a full-house .458 load in a #1H. I own one of those too, but can't really compare on the recoil.

The .475 Turnbull #1 is a C weight barrel, and the rifle is probably a pound lighter than the .458 with its heavier barrel. So yeah, it has significant recoil. I'm not flinching yet, but I'm not far from it. blush

Woodleigh's velocity recommendation creates a bit of a dilemma. Turnbull only shows 1875 fps as the top velocity for the caliber, so caution is indicated. Or I could say the hell with this abuse and load hard cast 425's at 1800 fps, and probably shoot through anything smaller than an elephant smile

for interested parties, here is Turnbull's data for the cartridge:

http://www.turnbullmfg.com/client_images/catalog19872/pages/files/475TurnbullReloadingData_3.pdf

I'm having good luck with Varget, and continue working up loads with the Woodleighs. Also will try cast bullets.

FWIW, 70 gr of Varget drives the 500gr Woodleighs 1975 fps out of the #1's 26 barrel. Accuracy is still good; I will continue working up as I'd like to see the 500's make at least 2100 fps. Woodleigh suggests impact velocities of 1800-2200 fps. As best I can estimate the BC, starting at 2100 leaves a 100 yard velocity of 1875 fps, which is in the recommended range.
