I just took my 280ai Weaver rifle out to 600 with the NBT 140.
Just under 4" group600 off the bench.
How far will the 140NBT work for deer?
We hunt from elevated stands with a frt and rear rest for the rifle.

Do the math, I killed a buck at 30 yds using a fireforming load from a 7mm TCU, launched at 2,000 mv, at dusk, hit a limb on a tree in front of him, or he took a step at the shot, hit far back, deer went maybe 100 yds, blood trail, sufficient damage internally. I would figure 1900-1950 impact as minimum, I would not want less, but shot placement rules. That should get you pretty far out there, surely 500-600 yds, not run numbers.

Good hunting and clean kills.

How fast do you think you are launching them at? That will determine the residual velocity at any given range.

I used to shoot that combo and consider it about a 600m load

I'd shoot a 140 ballistic tip at a deer as far as I was confident of a good hit. The limiting factor for me would be shot placement, not bullet performance with a ballistic tip. I'd be confident of the bullet performance farther out than I'd be confident of me making a good hit.

I feel confident of good shot placement out to 600 with no wind.
The wind usually lays just before dark and that is when the deer come into the fields.
Thanks for the help.

I've used the 7mm 150 NBT for deer for many years and think they are the best deer bullet going. I'd agree if you can get one confidently in the vitals the bullet will perform at the yardage.

If there is a bullet that will do better on deer at almost any range I haven't seen it. I'm only experienced with results from 40 yards to 400 first hand but do know guys who have killed deer at over 500 with them. The fact that they shoot so accurately in my 7mm has always been a big factor in how confident I have been in them. I do go with the Barnes TTSX for hunting elk.

I'd be looking hard at a 150 NBT or 162 in a 280/7Mag - more efficient use of capacity IMHO.

Kenny Jarrett used them out of a .280ai at 3200 out past 500.

Exit hole on a 3x5 mule buck at 477 yards with 140 Nos Ballistic Tip from 7mmRM loaded hot.

A guy behind me in his truck, [500 yards from the deer with his windows rolled up] heard the bullet hit the deer and he said is sounded like a prairie dog getting hit.

This is my favorite bullet.
If I look at the 120 and 150 gr Bal Tip at 65kpsi zeroed at 200 yards, the elevation is 6.31 moa for 500 yards.
But if I look at the 140 gr Bal Tip at 65kpsi zeroed at 200 yards, the elevation is 5.93 moa for 500 yards.

140 gr Bal Tip seems to be the optimum for 500 yards, which has been my limit.... but I am trying to get better.

I have used 7 mm Berger VLDs in various cartridges of that caliber since '05-'06. Jack rabbits to elk all fell with one bullet in the vitals with ranges from 56 to 1005 yards. I would like to say a tremendous bull elk dropped at 1005 but in fact it was a large jack rabbit hit with a 7 mm x .404. The same rifle does manage one shot kills with VLDs on bull elk at 625 or so. I use 168 grain bullets in the magnums and 140's in everything else. I like the 180 VLD's but my magazine is not long enough to allow them to be properly seated out far enough. Yeah I know that can be fixed with a little work but the 168's are "good enough".

Used my Jarrett 280 for legal culling of does, plus normal hunting applications for about 28 years. 99% of the deer I've shot with this rifle have been shot with your load. I've killed from point blank (under my stand), out to 600+ with zero problems. Won't quote the actual number of kills for this rifle/load, but it is substantial.

That bullet will probably work better at the extended ranges than up close. It will hold together better at the slower velocity.
