A long while back, John Barsness recommended that I try Magnum in my '06 with bullets 200gr and heavier. I haven't been able to pick any up yet. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these powders in '06?

I got rid of my '06 before these powders became available.

On a related note, I remember finding H870 for about $4/lb when H4831 was running nearly $10/lb. I tried loading some 220 MK's up in my old Win 670 '06 over a case full of H870 and lighting it off with a CCI 250.

The bullet impacted the target almost a foot low at 100 yds, and left powder granules in the barrel and through the action. I finally used the remainder of that can of H870 as lawn fertilizer about thirty years later.

I don't think I played w/200 grain but I do remember trying it in my 06.
It was slower than quickload predicted and burned pretty dirty.
I'd have to say there are better powders for the 06.

I did email Ramshot and the tech's reply was that he suspected but wasn't sure that I wouldn't have quite enough volume in the case to make the most of Magnum. He said he would ask around there. He didn't get back to me as of 2 months or so ago. If I can ever find some, I am going to try it, anyway. Plan to start at 96% and up to 100% fill. If it is accurate with one bullet, maybe I'll try others. All this is contingent on finding some for sale, of course.

Looked up my records. My thinking at the time was alot of magpro in a roomy case could be good.
I used neck sized win cases w/a 190 hornady.
64 grains magpro got to the bottom of the neck.
The result was a pretty pathetic 2560 fps and dirty burn.
I can outdo this w/my 308 savage.
Now you'll probably need an extra grain or two of magnum to match this.
Bottom line...go for it if you have another gun to burn the magnum in.....I just don't think you're gonna have much luck here.

Here's a good place for 3006 performance powders.
Check the threads about 3006 pressure testing....good reads....
It would be cool if there were even more cartridges tested....

Thanks kraky111. I remember seeing the pressure data there a while back, and I appreciate your input/experience with Magpro.

I use both powders in cases with more capacity/bore ratio. I would use ramshot hunter in your application.

Politicians and Diapers both need to be changed often, and for the same reason!

I've used Hunter extensively. It works really well with bullets up to 180, but even with those, there is a bunch of empty case when pressure signs show up.

Wait, everybody hold on a minute. I didn't know there was another powder besides IMR4350 that could be used in a 30-06.

Bigswede, there may not be. It's still conjecture at this point.

The .30/06 is the equivalent of a ballistic incinerator. The list of powders that are ill-suited is likely shorter, than the alternative.

Which may make the old, boring and unexciting '06 an ideal round for this age of powder shortages. It'll do pretty well with just about whatever one can find on dealer's shelves...

BTW, this weekend, Cabela's at Gonzales, LA had some IMR powder stocked, 7828, 3031 and 4064, IIRC. Of course, no Hodgdon such as Varget...

Just had a thought. I wonder if Obummer has axed importation of gunpowder...

I'm seeing U.S. made IMR powder, not Australian or other foreign make powder on dealers shelves. Although, I did recently pick up some Norma powder.

Does anyone have any info on how far reaching his latest executive order was that banned AK importation? Did by chance it include imported ammo, powder, etc.?

No, foreign powder is not banned--but there have been some practical problems involved in getting it here.

In the case of Hodgdon's Australian-made powders, in normal times one ship at a time could bring plenty over. When demand spiked one ship wouldn't hold enough powder, so they started sending two ships or more. The trouble occurred in the Auckland, New Zealand seaport, where they stop to refuel. The Kiwis got nervous about having TWO ships full of powder in the harbor at once, so said only one could be there at any given time. This naturally put a crimp in the supply-line.

The reason Ramshot's Belgian-made rifle powders aren't as available (aside from far more demand, that is) is the plant over there had a fire last year. It didn't damage the entire plant, and while the repairs have been made, production was reduced so they could do plenty of safety-testing while bringing everything up to speed. But they are anticipating supplies will be up to NORMAL soon. However, that doesn't mean demand will be down to NORMAL anytime in the near future.

Dunno what's happening with powder from Scandinavia, but do known demand has been outstripping supply there as well.

Now, maybe if the Kiwis had their own spot here on the Fire, like the Aussies, they wouldn't be so hostile, getting our powder shipped... shocked
