I went yesterday and found that the squirrels are beginning to hit the pin oaks and pignut hickorys. The acorn mast is spotty with most of acorns coming from pin oaks and over cups but most of the hunting I've been doing has been in low lying areas. I going this morning to Wappapello lake so I will have a better idea what the red and white oak situation is.

So far, I don't think the white oak mast is going to amount to much. I am seeing pin oak,red oak, and over cup acorns. Over all, I don't think we are going to have as many acorns as last year.

Really... that is interesting. I am thinking ahead to deer season now.

2 weeks from today, we'll be at it, hunting limb chickens. Peep sight on my 10/22 worked loose, yesterday, while shooting with my son and soon to be son-in-law. Took it back out this am, and got it back on target. Gun shoots better than I do. grin

Illinois season opened up Aug. 1st. I have 10 in the freezer from my first two hunts.

They were cutting acorns and trying some hickories out as well.

Took 4 off one white oak about 2 hours ago.. didnt have to take a step. Fired four times about 5 minutes apart, picked up the dead and moved on. Love it when it happens that way smile

Well boys, one week from right now, I'll be off to the woods for my first squirrel hunt of 2014. Can't believe how fast this year is going.

Down to 2 days before the opening. Gonna spray my hunting clothes with permethrin and hang them out to dry, and finish putting odds/ends in the truck......

I got the end all rifle for squirrel this year.

The Western Auto Revelation.

It's got an old weaver on it right now, but I'm thinking of crafting a peep sight to go on the dovetail.

It's one of those "Mikey" guns.

It eats everything.

Short, Long, Long Rifle,
cheap, standard, boutique,
lead, copper, even brass plated Remington
round nose, hollow points.

And once you adjust the sights/scope, its on.

I used it to shoot down some dead tree limbs near the house.
Took a few shots to blast it apart in the right spot, but it worked well.

And I can shoot off that cheap Centurion crap that doesn't work in anything else I have.
