So I have a trued 700 short action, a slick McSwirley Classic, and I'm torn between a 22-250ai, a 308, and a 338 Federal.
I've got a hammer 308, but its 9.5# all up. So an 8# .308 appeals to me.
I've got a 223 AI on the way, and no other 22CFs. So maybe that counts as a hole in the line-up...but honestly, I'm in South Mississippi, so no varmints, and while I'd knock the tar out of a deer with a 22 CF, I just can't imagine that I'd reach for it often.... Or in reality that it would fill a needed slot between 223 AI and 243 AI. But cool to own?...Yes.
I've bad-mouthed 338 Federal in the past. But dang if I sort of think that a 20" Fed might be fun to bust dear and hogs with.
Decisions.

You know good and well a 7.5-8# scoped .308 would be great. That caliber is what you first mentioned.

.358 Win 20" would be just a bit cooler than the Fed.

Look and learn of the function and benefits of more sophisticated designs than that entry level cookie cutter action.
Features such as CRF, a three position M70 type safety that controls the firing pin and a well attached bolt handle are desirable on a hunting rifle.
Look at the old M70's, Kimbers, and some Mausers.
Buy a ready made rifle and get better value and delivery.

Gotcha on the 7-08. Take savages advice and scrap the 700 they are walmart specials that suck. Just mail it to me as I'm sure it won't feed or shoot worth a crap. I chuckle at his posts every time I see one

Forgot they need blue tape to keep the handle and bolt together 338/358 both are killing rounds, not sure you are in "need" of anything, if ranges not far, the 35 offers more frontal area, the 225 Sierra is your one bullet does all, no PT/TSX needed. Buddy hammered some deer w/a 350 RM of mine w/the 225s, generous exit hole thru the hide, which allows blood to easily flow, though if not mistaken, his deer fell where hit. Light jacketed pistol bullets can sizzle for cheap practice, milk jugs vaporize at 200 yds. Heck I dumped a doe at 75 yds using a Marlin 357 using 158s at 2000mv, so you have a hammer bigger than your 308 since you want something different. The 338F is a good round also, but odds are at the ranges you use either, trajectory is of no concern. If you want to use 200s as some do in a 358, I personally would run a 338F, but the 225/35 is potent over H335. Call Rich at Sierra for more info, he uses the combo in a Ruger 77. Speaking of Ruger, do not rule out a factory 77 in 358, a SS dropped into a McM, and a trigger tune or swap would be a reliable killing tool. FYI, http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/358_wcf.htm

With pigs on the menu, the 338 Fed sounds like a winner. Should knock the bejeesus out of any porker who gets too close. Recoil should be very tolerable and it should be extremely easy to load for.

308 it is. 10 twist, #3 Brux is on the way from Greg at BugHoles. I'm about to build the perfect do-all rifle. It will change the course of human affairs.
