I have my grandfathers 99 take down. SN/331xxx My dad had the rear sight changed after he missed a deer in the '70s I may have original rear sight someplace in the house. He asked the gunsmith to drill for a scope, thank God he told him "don't do it" I tried to attach a pic , but it's telling me file is too big. I croped it down still too big. I'll try taking a lower res pic. My grampa used to shoot the heads off partridges with it. He, my dad and I have all shot deer with it.
You can use the Microsoft paint program to reduce the picture size, or to crop out the parts of the picture that doesn't show the rifle. Might want to start a new thread with your picture also, might get a lot of discussion about it. If the picture is still too large, just start a new thread and ask if somebody will help you. Several of us will usually jump in and help.

Just picked up a 1899C (I think it's a C, half octagon / half round make in 1901 via the SR# 10.8xx maybe you guys can tell me?) FARM FRESH. Was reported to have been found in the rafters of an out building in Northern PA. has the old style tang sight with a Beech front sight. Wood very dark oil stained had that funky black old man sludge caked on it and the thing smelled like my grand parents house from the 1960's...you know that oil furnace smell....lol really took me back. BUT the coolest thing is it has 60 kill notches in the stock. Awesome rifle! Ohhh it's in 303. Thanks Paleoman PS I have several 1899/99's super designed rifle!
To All Ever Wonder as to How Many Savage's Still Exist? How Many Orginal's,Untouched-Modified-Altered are around??.... Steve
Can't say it meets all the above criteria,
99G in 22SHP, ser 225XXX. Inherited on Dads passing.
Thirty something years ago I let the gun slip, it hit butt first marring the shotgun butt and taking a chip out of the stock. Figured it was a good excuse to take her down to parts for a cleaning, got it back together except for the butt plate, front blade and wood chip. Wanted to smooth and straighten the plate and polish the bead.
Mom came through and cleaned my room. Not sure what happened to the butt plate, she said she thought the front sight was just a little piece of metal ....
Filed a front blade out of a nickel. Rear sight is a Marble flip down. Peeps gone when either Dad or the previous owner had the rifle fit for a Weaver K4 using a Redfield Jr. scope block.
Want to replace the rear stock. It's about 3 inches too short and my thumb punching me in the nose is a bit too much of a distraction.
Been thinking of having a 30-30 barrel made for a couple of decades now. 30-30 cartridge will fit the rotary, and the 30-30 is the right era so the action won't be stressed.
Yeah, she likes to push primers a little so she is effectively retired. Unless I absolutely need it.

start a new post with some pictures. 99G in 22HP are not common. You might be better served to find an original front sight and butt plate.
Finding a 30-30 barrel and getting it fit, especially with the expectations that it will share the forearm will be both difficult and expensive. You might be better off to just buy another.
the tang sight is an early lyman. Looks like this gun is missing the safety??? Have you pried that stuff off the lever yet? Is it cracked under there or maybe someone wanted some "padding"
If you really want to have a discussion about it... start a new thread and post the picture there.

While 1920 is well inside the interchangeable era of mass production I've always known that if I found a barrel that would screw on and be close enough to work I would be waiting for something to happen next, like waking up.
Finding a serviceable 30-30 barrel would be a trick in itself. I've always been curious how much it would cost to have one fit to the gun but really don't want to know, if you know what I mean.
Same thing with getting a barrel blank and having a Gunsmith fit it to the frame and stock. It's what I call lottery work, it's on the top of the list if I hit 7 or better figures. Meaning never.
There is an option of having the barrel bored and/or lined, collectors value means darn little to me, except for what I could get out of it in a trade, except I'm not inclined to trade because this is a family heirloom, what a perfect little Hell.
Yes, I would be better off just getting another 99, one that has never seen corrosive primer.
I'll eventually get around to posting pictures just to make sure this 99 is what I think it is.

Either way, welcome to the fire.
Thanks!

This was my grandfathers savage he gave me years ago. I used it a few years ago to harvest a couple of does during a management hunt. It is a 303 savage and will always be with me till I pass it on.
Years ago, I was stationed at Travis AF Base in Northern California. This photo dates back to 1992. I shot these two blacktail bucks one morning with my Savage .308 and they dropped where they stood. Superb performance!
I never liked bolt action rifles. My Savage model 99 has served me well: very accurate, silent safety, smooth action, good trigger.
The fore ends would come glass bedded up to the screw then free floated for accuracy. A 3/8 crescent black rubber butt pad should keep recoil managable when shooting from a prone position all day.
New collector. 99A 308, 99C 308, 99F 300, 99C 7mm-08, 99EG 250-3000, all 98-99%. 99 brushgun 375, my go-to gun for years, 99 270 Titus custom. 7 total for me at this point.

My father had a 99 in 300 savage. It was a takedown model and the first gun I hunted with. I think it was my granfather's gun and I wanted that gun to be mine. I shoot left handed so I uses levers and pumps....but when my dad died, he left that rifle to my brother. The gun is original and unmodified. My brother told me I'd have to buy it from one of his kids after he dies....I finally found one on GB and bought it. It's a 1940 vintage, same caliber and a takedown model....It's on its way and I can't wait....
