The winchester 88 conversion is just one of those ideas for when I have more room for spare guns. I am looking for a gun that I can use in all the environments I hunt in which a few doesn't allow semi-autos.

I shot a Deerfield carbine a couple times, I was a M-1 Carbine nut in my youth (still am I guess) and that really spoke to me.

You can probably find someone selling a nice bolt rifle in 35 Whelen. I was going to suggest a Marlin chambered in 444 Marlin until I saw the post discussing problems with loading gates. If loading gates are acceptable, you might also look at the Marlin in 375 win.

This sounds like a 300 savage 99 or a marlin 336/93/1893 in 30/30 to me. IMHO

Put me down for another vote for the 99 Savage "R" in 300 Savage. If you can't locate one, an EG will do just fine as well.

I'll second that statement.

Saw a beautiful Savage 99 in .308W at Cabelas today. My favorite levers for your purposes, though, are Ruger #1's and Marlins.

Ruger #1's have good weight and length and can be and in many chamberings. My Marlins (.30-30, .375 Win and .45-70) are hard to beat for fun. For light recoil with hunting loads the .30-30 is the way to go.

Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
