I decided to go with a peep on a late production (tang safety, I'm guessing made in the '70s) 99A in .250 Savage. I put a Williams Foolproof on it and it will need a taller front sight as I just verified at the range.

The stock sight already seems pretty tall. The load is kind of standard for the caliber; 34 grains of IMR4320 and a Sierra 100 grain Spitzer. I'm guessing the barrel is about 20" long. At 25 yards it hit 6-7 inches high with the sight bottomed out.

Any advice? I may just call Williams in the morning and see what front sight they recommend.

That is fairly common when switching to the peep sight.

Your front sight should have a number on it. If you can provide that I can tell how tall it is. I have 4 different heights in the newer style sights.

You need a front sight that is about .0200 taller than the one you have now...I estimated a 26" sight radius for your rifle. If you measure it exactly, this calculator will give you the exact correction. Enter all values in inches:

I recommend that you don't do that.

I also recommend you have a conversation with Mr. Lightfoot

Looking at the lest side of the front sight, there's a number that I thin is a 31 (????) I'll have to scrounge up a magnifying glass, because I wouldn't swear to that number. Does that ound like the number I'd need?

Uncle Sam did LASIC on me about five year ago and for most things, I'm ay better off, but I found that for focusing down on close detail stuff like this, I think I was better off with my old eyes and corrective lenses

That's a neat tool, thanks. It does appear that what I have is a 31. Looking at Marbles web site, that seems like what it is.

Looks like I need a 37 or taller? Do you have one in stock?

Apparently I entered a wrong number in the calculator because I just rechecked it and you need a sight that is .200 taller if you are off 7 inches at 25 yards with a 26" sight radius. Be sure to measure your sight radius exactly and do the calculation yourself to be sure.

(I think I failed to to convert yards to inches properly in my first post).

I'll do that. Thanks for that link. My old 99EG wears a Lyman peep on it and I had to replace the front sight on it a few years ago, but just went with trial and error. It shoots well now, but I'm not real wild about the sight picture on it now, I may change it out again.

This rifle sure handles a lot better with a peep than a scope.

Here's the numbers on the 4 Savage sights that are used on the 99. I don't know who made them for Savage.

28 .375 to .390"
31 0.410"
34 0.445"
38 0.470"

I have all of them on hand.
